Waterford manager Derek McGrath has stressed that playing seven defenders at the back suits their style of play.

McGrath was speaking to the Waterford News & Star when he was questioned about playing an extra defender against Cork as Tadgh De Burca dropped back in front of the full back line.

And the Waterford manager stressed that the system was not about outnumbering their opponents at the back, but basically it is to suit their style.

"It's not about protecting players," said McGrath. It's what you feel is best for your team. The irony of it is in the first three matches, we didn't play with seven at the back.

"Even though people thought we did, we didn't. We're building towards a game that works better in the summer."

McGrath added that the management team were still unsure of what Austin Gleeson's best position on the team is.

"There is discussion I suppose. When he came into the team he was left half forward against Cork in 2014. He played the whole league campaign at right half back when we won the league in 2015."
