There are fears in Galway hurling circles that they could be about to lose one of their brightest prospects to Aussie Rules.

Jack Canning's attendance at today's AFL draft combine in UCD has the Westerners on high alert. He scored two goals in a man of the match display in Galway's All-Ireland minor hurling final victory over Cork in September - just before his famous uncle Joe helped the seniors to their first Liam MacCarthy Cup success in 29 years at Waterford's expense.

The multi-talented teenager has also excelled on the rugby fields for Cistercian College, Roscrea and has admitted that he is open to the idea of pursuing a rugby career if an Irish province comes in for him.

Another Galway youngster, Cillian McDaid, recently signed for AFL outfit Carlton.
