Kilkenny manager Brian Cody will have to plan without Paul Murphy and Colin Fennelly for the early part of the 2018 campaign as they head off on a tour of duty with the Irish Army.

It is not the first time that the duo have missed the NHL as they have been on tours before, but this time they will also miss the first round of the Leinster SHC.

The travelling party depart for the Lebanon today (Friday) and are not due to return to Ireland until May 18th and Fennelly admitted to the Kilkenny People that they will have work on the field to do when they return.

"We know we will be playing catch up, but we will do our best to be in the best shape possible we can be when we come home," stated Fennelly.

The former All-Star will return home in a few weeks for a couple of days as he has been allowed travel home for the wedding of his brother Micheal, where he will be best man.
