Former Dublin defender Paddy Christie says Jim Gavin’s successor must be prepared to put his “whole life on hold”.

Following Gavin’s shock decision to step down last week, Dublin county board are expected to name a replacement for the six-time All-Ireland winning manager inside the next 10 days ahead of county convention.

Dessie Farrell has been tipped as the hot favourite and Christie reckons the new appointment in the capital will have to invest a huge commitment into the job.

“I’d imagine Dessie Farrell has to be top of the pick (to replace Gavin) because of what he’s done,” Christie told the Irish Daily Star.

“I wouldn’t know any of these guys that are being mentioned very well. I wouldn’t be talking to them much over the years. So, I don’t know if Dessie has other things going on in his life because you’d have to – weigh things up again.

“I think you have to be prepared to put your whole life on hold and whether it’s himself, or Pat Gilroy, or Declan Darcy – are any of these guys prepared to do that?”
