FL1: Harte breaks Monaghan

February 23, 2019

Tyrone's Cathal McShane and Monaghan's Drew Wylie

Peter Harte produced a magnificent display in helping Tyrone to victory over Monaghan at Omagh – 1-16 to 0-12.

Harte contributed 1-6 of the winners’ tally as the hosts recorded their first win of the campaign and sent their neighbours closer to the relegation trapdoor.

The Errigal Ciaran clubman's third-minute goal ensured the Red Hands of a 1-7 to 0-7 half-time lead, Conor McManus keeping the Farney County in touch before the break with some classy scores of his own.

But the off-form Farney County were anonymous when the second half began and Tyrone took complete control of proceedings, reeling off eight unanswered points to ease into an unassailable 1-15 to 0-7 lead, Kieran McGeary, Harte (3), Cathal McShane (2), Niall Morgan (free) and substitute Conor Meyler providing those scores.

Monaghan – who were level after 15 minutes thanks to points from Dermot Malone and McManus (4) but only added two Jack McCarron points before the break - didn’t raise another flag until the 27th minute of the second half when Ryan McAnespie pointed.

After beating Dublin in the first round, they have now lost three in a row and are looking more and more like relegation material, with a trip to Kerry up next tomorrow week.
