Jack Cooney’s reign as Westmeath senior football manager got off to a winning start against Carlow in today’s O’Byrne Cup clash at Netwatch Cullen Park.

The Lake County came away with a 0-12 to 0-8 victory under their belt.

The first-half finished with the visitors 0-9 to 0-5 to the good and they were able to cope with the set-back of having top scorer Sean Petit sin-binned for 10 minutes at the start of the second-half.

Petit raised five white flags (0-3 frees) for the team in maroon and white while substitute Luke Loughlin chipped in with three points from placed balls.

Kieran Martin also made a telling impact off the bench while the home side lost the services of All-Star nominee Paul Broderick to injury in the 9th minute.

Meanwhile, despite being named at midfield in their starting 15, Brendan Murphy didn’t feature for the Barrowsiders.
