O'Byrne Cup: Wexford too strong for Louth

December 08, 2018

Wexford were seven-point winners over Louth in Darver

Wexford 0-16

Louth 1-6

Wexford put a disappointing 2018 behind them to make a winning start to their 2019 O'Byrne Cup campaign against Louth in Darver.

Played under the new experimental rules, the game briefly came to life when a Sam Mulroy goal shortly after the restart brought the hosts to within a point. However, Wexford outscored them by 0-7 to 0-1 thereafter to run out comfortable winners.

Wayne Kierans' first competitive game in charge of the Wee County started brightly as Conor Branigan and Cian Callan landed early points. But the visitors hit back with scores from Donal Shanley, Barry O'Connor and Conor Carty to lead by 0-5 to 0-3 after 14 minutes.

The Slaneysiders had extended their lead to 0-9 to 0-5 by the interval before Mulroy's major early in the second half gave Louth hope. But it was all Wexford after that as points from Carty, Jonathan Bealin, Kevin O'Grady, Cathal Devereaux (three) and veteran Ben Brosnan put them out of reach.
