Eamonn Burns will take some time out to assess his future as Down manager following yesterday's unlucky championship exit at the hands of Cavan.

The Bryansford clubman, who was part of the Mourne County's most recent All-Ireland winning sides in 1991 and '94, has been in charge for the last three years, with the highlight of his reign coming last year when Down ousted Monaghan to reach the Ulster SFC final.

"I'll let the dust settle for a week or two, speak to people I need to speak to and make a decision," he told RTÉ.

Burns felt the dismissal of Ryan Johnston in the second half had a huge bearing on the outcome of the Ulster derby.

"We lost a man with 20 minutes to go when we were in control of the game. We had the two black cards as well and we were dealt with some very hard blows, but we still battled away right to the wire."
