Martin targets silverware

Kieran Martin and Westmeath celebrate their 2016 Leinster SFC semi final win over Meath at Croke Park

Westmeath forward Kieran Martin admits that competing for silverware is always good for confidence.

The Lake County have the opportunity to pick up their first bit of silverware since their NFL Division 4 success last year, when they take on neighbours Meath in the O'Byrne Cup final at O'Moore Park on Sunday.

Having defeated Laois (twice) and Offaly on the way to the final, Martin told the Westmeath Topic that preparations for the league are going according to plan.

"Lads are playing well at the moment, we are moving well and we are where we need to be for this time of year. It is great to win a semi-final, great to beat Offaly of course. We have a final this week but we still have our eye on the league," said Martin.

"The first round of the league is the following week, but when you get to a final you realise you don't get to too many, so we will go out to win it.

"Most of us in that dressingroom only have one medal and some of us are playing nine or ten years now so it would be nice to win another one.

"We want to be playing games, it is a great opportunity to give lads a run. We could go training on a Sunday morning and play 15 against 15, but you can't beat the intensity of a match, for fitness and to keep your eye on the ball.

"You can do running all day long but still match fit is what you have to be, so you just have to get the miles in both on the pitch and off it."
