Westmeath have been dealt a blow over the Christmas period following the news that experienced defender Kevin Maguire will not be available for this year's campaign.

Maguire has been an important member of the full back line for the past few seasons, but the Caulry clubman has informed Westmeath manager Colin Kelly that he won't be part of the squad.

The reason for Maguire's absence is that he is travelling abroad for the majority of the coming year, which rules him out of participating in the league and championship.

Meanwhile, it is unclear whether or not Paddy Holloway will return to action this year after the Castledaly man suffered a cruciate ligament injury during last year's Leinster SFC.

The St Loman's contingent have been given an extended break following their heart breaking defeat in the Leinster club SFC final, but it is not known whether or not Paul Sharry will return to the county fold this year as speculation is increasing that the player is keen to take a year out.
