Lidl National Football League

A wet and windy Ballycumber, Offaly was the venue for the fifth round of the Lidl National Football League for the Tipperary Intermediate Ladies Footballers who were playing the hosts, Offaly on Saturday last. Offaly had the aid of the breeze which was blowing at a slight angle up the field and were first to the score board with a pointed free from Mairead Daly in the second minute. The heavy ground meant that play was arduous and in the eleventh minute Aishling Moloney scored a goal for Tipperary putting them ahead. This was not to last, as Offaly's Aoife Corbett and Mairead Daly pointed to equalise the game on the twentieth minute. Bernie Walsh and Mairead Daly gave Offaly the lead again when they added two further points to Offaly's score line. Alison Lonergan added a point on the twenty fifth minute and the sides traded points just before half time to go in at half time Offaly 0-6 Tipperary 1-2.

The margin of the point at half time was reduced in the first minute of the second half when Aishling Moloney pointed to equalise. From the kick out the ball was fed back down the field to Aishling Moloney who passed to Alison Lonergan to raise the green flag, putting Tipperary back in front. Aishling pointed in the thirty seventh minute before setting up Emma Buckley for another Tipperary goal moments later. Gillian O'Brien added another point to the score line so that Tipperary went into the final quarter Tipperary 3-6 Offaly 0-6. Scores had evaded Offaly until the forty sixth minute when Aoife Corbett added their only point of the second half to their score line. As both teams made changes, Tipperary continued to dominate and an Aishling Moloney goal followed by 1-1 for substitute Aisling McCarthy ensured a comprehensive victory for the travelling Tipperary side - Tipperary 5-7 Offaly 0-7.

Tipperary have an unbeaten record to date and will now look forward to their next game at home in Ardfinnan on Sunday, March 26th when their opponents will be Leitrim.

Munster Ladies Gaelic Football Under 16A Championship

The Tipperary Ladies Under 16 team travelled to Mallow to play Cork in round one of the Munster Ladies Gaelic Football Under 16A Championship. The Tipperary girls are competing in the A competition this year as a result of winning All Irelands at Under 14 level in 2015 and 2016. There was a cross field wind favouring Cork in the first half and underfoot conditions were good after some morning rain.

 

Tipperary were first on the scoreboard with a point from Ava Fennessy after two minutes but within a minute Cork had equalised. The early exchanges were even with the game flowing from end to end with both teams having opportunities. On the seventh minute Cork scored a goal from a penalty and followed it up from the kick out with another point. Tipperary responded well with two points; one from play by Ava Fennessy, the other from a free by Angela McGuigan however this was to be the last Tipperary score in the first half. Cork added a point on the fourteenth minute and then on the seventeenth minute after a deflection scored another goal. The momentum was now with Cork, finishing the first half on a high with another goal on the twenty seventh minute leaving the half time score line; Cork 3-3 Tipperary 0-3.

 

Tipperary made some changes at half time introducing Ellie Ryan, Caoimhe Ryan and Alison Connolly. The Tipperary girls got off to a great start with Angela McGuigan scoring a goal from a free. The momentum was now with Tipperary, their defence on top and goalkeeper Rachel Sweeney bringing off a great save. Tipperary reduced the margin with an Ava Fennessy point after an excellent Ellen Moore intersection. Half way through the second half Cork's Aine Keating was sinbinned and with a numerical advantage Tipperary began to create openings in the Cork defence. Orla Winston seized the opportunity and with the help of a deflection scored Tipperary's second goal. As the game approached the final ten minutes Cork scored their first point of the second half and Tipperary responded excellently with two points by Angela McGuigan, one from a free. In the 27th a great twenty meter run by Ellie Ryan was expertly offloaded to Angela McGuigan, who brought the teams level by scoring a critical point. A tense last few minutes followed, with Cork regaining the lead though a free on the 29th minute. The Tipperary girls refused to give up and in final minute worked the ball down field and after a long delivery to the full forward line Emma Morrissey was perfectly positioned to level the scores with a well taken point.

Post Primary Schools Competitions

Congratulations to the Secondary Schools who have reached the All Ireland Finals in the Senior Post Primary Schools Competitions. Tipperary are represented on John the Baptist School Senior team who will compete in the Lidl All Ireland Post Primary School Senior A Championship Final against St Ciaran's, Ballygawley at a fixture to be decided. In the Lidl All Ireland Post Primary School Senior B Championship Final Loretto Clonmel will play St. Josephs Secondary School, Rochortbridge in O'Moore Park at 12.15pm on Sunday, March 26th. Presentation Secondary School, Thurles will play Holy Faith S.S. in the Lidl All Ireland Post Primary School Senior C Championship Final in O'Moore Park at 2.15pm on Sunday, March 26th.

In the Junior Competition John the Baptist School qualified for the All Ireland Junior A Final when they overcame Presentation College, Tuam after a very tight semi final, John the Baptist School 1-9 Presentation College, Tuam 1-8.
