When is a championship not a championship?

Tipperary could meet Cork again in the Munster MFC.

Some of the anomalies in this year's Munster minor football and hurling championships raise serious questions.

The provincial council utilises a back-door system in both competitions, which oftentimes leads to rather ridiculous scenarios.

For example, in the 2016 Munster MHC, Waterford could lose THREE times and still go on to win the All-Ireland! Na Deise already lost their quarter-final to Cork at Walsh Park last Wednesday week but are still very much in the chase.

They're due to face Tipperary in a play-off on April 23rd and, should they lose again, will get a third bite at the cherry against Clare in the first week of May. Victory therein would secure a semi-final berth. Should Waterford win that and lose the final, they would still gain entry to the All-Ireland series. Theoretically, four lives in one championship.

In the Munster MFC, meanwhile, Cork and Tipperary played out a thrilling quarter-final last night. The Rebels prevailed but will in all likelihood also meet the Premier County in the last four. That's because Cork will face the side that comes through the three-way play-off between Tipp, Limerick and Waterford.

In fact, Tipp could actually benefit from last night's defeat as (assuming they keep winning) they will get run-outs against both the Treaty County and Na Deise over the next two Wednesdays prior to facing the Leesiders again in the semi-finals on May 11th.

Lose a semi-final in either code and you are out. Strange stuff.
