Hayes' Hotel Thurles

Hayes Hotel in Thurles, where the GAA was formed 130 years ago, has been sold at auction for €650,000.

The landmark hotel went into receivership last April and remained open despite the appointment of receivers.

The identity of the lady who purchased the establishment with her opening bid - €165,000 above the reserve - remains unknown.

Michael Cusack and co. gathered in the billiards room of the hotel on November 1st, 1884, and that meeting gave rise to the Gaelic Athletic Association, which has had such a massive impact on all of our lives.
