Young Hurler of the Year Brendan Maher sustained the injury which could keep him out of Tipperary's Munster championship campaign while pucking around in his back garden.

Maher, who helped Tipp to All-Ireland senior and U21 honours last year, could face around three months on the sidelines with a suspected broken ankle.

And speaking to the Irish Daily Star, the Borrisoleigh lad revealed the innocuous prelude to the accident.

He said, "I just went over on it out in the yard pucking around. My foot got caught under me and I put all my weight down on it.

"I'll know more when I see the specialist."

A three-month recovery timeframe would keep Maher out of Tipp's remaining three Allianz National League games as well as the eagerly-awaited Munster SHC opener against old foes Cork at the end of May and a possible Munster semi-final three weeks later. Tweet
