Two games in one day for Thurles Sarsfields ladies

September 24, 2019

Thurles Sarsfields’ dual players will be asked to play huge championship camogie and ladies football matches this Sunday.

The Tipperary intermediate camogie championship semi-final has been fixed for 2pm, followed by the intermediate football championship final at 6pm. A total of eight players are on both teams.

The club released a statement saying that it had tried in vain to get one of the games moves but only succeeded in having the camogie clash pushed forward from 3pm to 2pm.

A club statement confirms: “The situation has been deemed unavoidable and the fixture stands. We feel as a club that this is extremely unfair on the players involved and their teammates and coaches, with both teams having put in an immeasurable amount of work to get to this stage of their competitions.

“Playing two games the same weekend would be unheard of for our male counterparts, despite the greater number of teams and dual players, never mind two games in the space of four hours.

“Unfortunately clashes of this nature are nothing new to camogie and ladies football players, not alone in Tipp but across the country at all age groups. By highlighting this issue, we hope that both boards can come together at all levels to work on protecting the efforts of all our players in the future.”

The situation arises after Dublin club Cuala were forced to concede their fourth-round senior camogie championship clash on Sunday “‘in the interests of the welfare of our female dual players”, with their ladies footballers contesting an intermediate championship final that same day.
