Limerick fought back from eight points down to record a truly magnificent 1-13 to 1-12 quarter-final victory over Tipperary at Thurles.
The Treaty County’s stunning success secures them a semi-final date with Kerry in Tralee on Thursday week.
Jerry O’Sullivan’s charges looked a beaten docket when Tipp, who led by eight points to five at the break, netted via Riain Quigley in the first minute of the second half, Sean O’Connor pointing a brace of frees to leave eight between the sides – 1-10 to 0-5 after 33 minutes.
Game over, surely? Incredibly, the visitors reeled off an unanswered 1-4 to move within a point by the 53rd minute: James Cummins pointed in between two John Hayes frees before Noel Callanan delivered the winners’ three-pointer halfway through the second period, followed swiftly by a point.
Tipperary replied but Hayes (free) and James Molyneaux tied the scores up for the first time with four minutes left. Substitute Niall McAuliffe equalised again with his first touch two minutes later and the game had a dramatic denouement when midfielder Jack Downey drilled over a ‘45’ in the fourth minute of injury time.
It was the first time Limerick led; they timed their run perfectly!
