Minor Championship
any predictions for the minor championship quarter-finals?

john.no1 , 02/09/2010 at 12:35

Sligo Club Championships
Championships are not won on paper. On paper its easy to predict Tour, Harps and Curry wins as they have the best players. However championship is all about hunger and we have seen in inter county that the team of better players can be beaten by a hard working fit team. I would be suprised if there is not some upsets in the 1/4 or semi finals. The big three mentioned above already have numerious championship medals so there is always the chance of complancey. That is what makes the championship what it is. It would also seem that many, including managers are talking these teams up in the hope of catching them out.

Why do people always pick Marren, all he ever does is get sent off. Just leave him at home. It would be better having fifteen players on the pitch.

just my opinion thats all and if you think its the ravings of a lunatic dont respond if u do respond its because you no there is truth in what i say

possibly the daftest thing i have ever heard anyone say on this site, you used to be one of the better posters on here rich but now you are just talking rubbish. You said that you don't care how many players from the north were on th 2007 team because they are chokers? but they won so how can they be chokers?

just because curry scraped by johns and hammered by far the worst team in the north sligo you think they are world beaters?
Anyways i'm right here and this is a forum so we dont want any sensibile discussion so don't bother replying!

Denzel, Johnny Davey is out until April im told, it wont be easy for him to back flying fit by May/June. I wish him well and hope im wrong or misinformed. I presume hes a definite started for everyone only that hes injured long term.

Why should we forget about St Molaise Gaels?, if anything the main men not to choke in the u21 final were Burns, and the 2 Gilsenans. Liam Kennedy who had a broken arm all yr was very good for the minors after 2 weeks training after a 1 yr out, serious bottle and courage shown there and shows a winners character. Are you telling Mark Quinn is a choker, if he didnt have wretched luck this yr and played we'd be connacht champions.

Sligo collectively as a county has unachieved in the past but this goes for more so when south sligo had most players on the county panel, only since this bias and balance of power shifted have Sligo looked like actually delivering on its potential as a county. We are still messing up at county level but its showing signs of change.

At the end of day St Molaise Gaels is a new club, unlike tubber, curry, tour, we havent the history yet, but hopefully we'll stay up this yr and write it off and start again and Owen B mightn be to far away for us imo.

i dont care how many where on it denzle i would always prefer a sligo team with less north county players on it they havent the heart for the fight. just my opinion thats all and if you think its the ravings of a lunatic dont respond if u do respond its because you no there is truth in what i say

Why is nobody picking johnny davey on their team. He has being our most consistent performer over past 5 years and should be back in plenty of time for next year championship.
As for the clown who talked about the North Division chokers. How many players from the North Division were on The Connacht Championship winning team of 2007?
7 mate thats half the team!

adrian mcintyre from tour should def be brought in, i would also bring in jason marren from curry if he would comit fully to it, egan worth his place as would k. gallagher from harps. would try giving farrell an extended run of four or five games and lets see what the lad can do, i would give the ballymote full-back mcgowan a chance also think he could be an option would like to see us put a bit of power around the middle third getting a way from the all speed approach which clearly is not working. my team woudl be something like this

farrell
harrison
mcgowan
donovon
k. gallagher
mcintyre
mcgovern
b. egan
t. taylor
a. marren
costello
sweeney( unless a better footballer of the same size is out there)
j. marren
d. maye
d. kelly

thats the point sligonian thanks for helping me out with it, what have they won with all these north sligo choakers???? NOTHING ABSOLUTLY NOTHING, forget about maloise geals, calry( there best player is now heading to mexico) and marys there is very little on them teams that impresses me, strandhill have some good players but cawley is not going to make a top class county player he will make a good oen not top class and i think costello is class. johns problem is they have too many of the same type of players nice lovely footballs and there a s smooth as a ken doll when it really comes down to it.

south sligo is where the really top players ply there trade end off. and the county champions will coem from there this year and the majority of the years over the next 10 years

I totally agree Garavogue Green has to go! I'm a firm believer in YOUR own kickouts being YOUR advantage and for me Green jus hoofs 50/50 ball which doesnt suit our middle third.

Farrell
Donavan C Davey B Kennedy
B Egan M Quinn K Cawley
A McIntyre T Taylor
K Sweeney Costello G Gaughan
D Kelly D Maye Coen

This is the kind of team I'd love to see in the FBD league just to breed these young boys in.

I'd love to see the following players introduced aswel
Johns: McGlynn (great strength and cool on the ball) Rooney ( i find him a joy to watch) C McNamara ( great pace)
Molaise: J Kelly ( a tenacious defender i followed a lot underage with the right weights training i feel hes our best up and coming defender) I wouldnt rate the Gilsenens BTW
Tubber: B Mcdonagh ( great on the ball)
Ballymote Peter Lyons deserves a chance
Curry Jason Marren (hes one of the best with the potential to become the best Coner forward in the county with the proper training) D McDonagh ( assured delivery of the ball and often left out of praise)
Tourlestrane: S King (Physically huge and deserves a say) J Leonard ( impressed me so far)
Harps K gallager ( has a serious engine)

Why not try new players in the FBD its not like brehony O'hara ....etc need the experience

For me theres a serious question mark over greene and our midfield aswell. GK in GAA is nearly 95% kickouts ability nowadays and like the lineout in rugby we have to find a way to win primary possesion in this set piece especially when we control our own kickout. Im finally brought myself round to watching the connacht final which im going to do the stats on and post them on here, but ive only got to 22mins in but so far in all greenes kickouts he is very slow in getting set up, does he ever watch cluxton? Only when greene is moving back from the tee to kickout does he lift his head. Then its long slow kickout with little or no variety. Just too slow and predictable. I feel farrell should get all the FBD matches in 2011 to show what he can do.

Why does everyone think gilmartin and taylor are certs for midfield? Is it because no one thinks theres alternatives. I suppose its worth reminding people that mullen, j davey and mcnamara are all injured and only expected back around april in 2011.

I would have thought it was a dead cert that Philip Greene has to go. Not to dwell on past failings but for me his continous hoofs down the centre on the day of the Connacht final played a large part in our demise. The one and only time he tried to pick out a player was when he placed it to Johnny Davey and a point resulted. I'll admit that I haven't seen too much of Jason Farrell but from what I hear he is a decent shot stopper and uses his brains when kicking the ball out.

looking forward to the weekend games.. tourlestrane stil the team to beat anyways. looking at paddypower harps are favourites would ent put money on them tho. geevagh v curry- curry to win by a close 2pts as geevagh hav found a good team.
harps v st marys - harps to win by 5-8 pts.. as tubber who st marys won against last are a poor team these days.
tourlestrane v coolera - exceptn coolera to make game of it but tourlestrane to win by point or two
ballymote v johns - ballymote to win by 2-3 pts

Problem areas last year were full back, Half back line as a defensive unit, and balance of the full forward line so i would te changes there.
Greene,
Harrison,
C Davey
Donovan
Egan
McIntyre/Quinn
Cawley
Gilmartin
Taylor
O'Hara
Brehony
Costello
Marren
Sweeney
Kelly

As Roscommon game showed the 3 small men in full forward line doesn't work. A big target man is needed to win any 50/50 balls in. J Davey is out for a while so i would slot Egan into half back line as half forwards were our best line last year. McIntyre/Quinn would improve the centre half back position
