It was a very busy week for our club with three titles coming to the parish.

Our U-16 boys were the first team of the week to take home silverware. The team had a 3-11 to 1-8 victory over Ballymote/Bunninadden in the B Championship final in Scarden, completing a double with their Division A2 League triumph. The game proved to be a very tough encounter and a tough test of character as the opposition fought hard to the whistle. Having the wind in the first half, our team went in at the break with a 7 point lead on a score of 2-5 to 0-4. Ballymote/Bunninadden came out strong in the second half. Aided with the wind, the boys in red and white came within 2 points half way through the second half. It took huge character from our team to dig deep but with some excellent defending and some great scores, the boys in green pulled off a hard fought victory ensuring their second title of the year. Congratulations to all the players, management and parents involved with the team.

The Minor Hurlers followed in the footsteps of their younger club mates when they secured the Minor Shield title on Friday night in Scarden with a 4-6 to 1-8 victory over Naomh Eoin. Having led at half time 3-5 to 0-2, the team pushed on in the second half to secure a historic win. Conan Marren gave a man of the match display covering every inch of the field while scoring 1-4. Cian Surlis notched 2 goals, Oisin Higgins converted 1-1 while Sean McVeigh got an excellent point from play. The defensive work of Conor Gilligan and Jon Durkin ensured Naomh Eoin had to work hard for their every score, while Ronan Walsh and Joe Molloy never lay down in the forward line.

The U-12 girls were the final team to win silverware this week, in the most enthralling football final held in Tourlestrane on Saturday afternoon. The girls secured the U-12 A Championship title, having won the U-12 A League earlier in the year. It took an injury time goal from Amy Kennedy to push the girls in front after CT Gaels bagged a goal in the 3rd quarter which kept them in front right into the last few minutes of the game. The teams were evenly matched throughout the game with the team's level on 0-1 point each at the end of the 1st quarter. Our girls edged in front in the 2nd quarter by the narrowest of margins on a score line of 0-3 to 0-2.The CT girls hit their purple patch in the 3rd quarter, grabbing a goal leaving our girls 1-2 to 0-4 points down heading into the 4th quarter. A final quarter with excellent work rate from every inch of the field earned our girls a 1-4 to 1-3 victory. The game marked the teams streak of 17 games unbeaten. Congratulations to each of the 18 girls involved, the management team and parents.

This team made a huge journey throughout the year. As follows are a short pen pic of each of the players contribution to the huge year of football they put in. In Goals we had Katie Cunney who's pin point accuracy from the kick outs were the envy of every team we played, some crucial saves broke the hearts of many teams this year, combined with the full back line of Erin Deehan and Jade Walsh they were the rock that our season was built on, numerous times Erin and Jade came out from a group of players following a brave block or high catch to snuff out danger. The Half Back line of Leah Walsh Amy Kennedy and Ciara Walsh as played as a complete unit launching attacks and supporting the full back line, they go about their role quietly but their style and calmness under pressure is a joy to watch. their blocking and disciplined defending with the other backs as a unit was one of the reasons we never conceded more than 9 scores in any of the 17 games we played this year. The Dynamic midfield of Cora Gilligan and Orla Fleming covered every blade of grass in every game never giving up , defending bravely indeed the winning goal in the final epitomised the never say die attitude of the girls it came from Orla chasing back and dispossessing the Gaels player in our half back line and passing the ball forward to Ciara Brennan who was fouled to create the goal chance. Cora drove Forward and got some crucial scores throughout the year as well as combining smartly to link the team together. Our half forward line of Sarah Walsh, Ciara Brennan and Emma Hegarty always were available to support the inside line and all kicked fantastic long range scores through out the season, Sarah's bravery was shown in the the way she came back from a hamstring injury in the last round of the championship to play in the final, unfortunately she had to come off in the final but Kayleigh Leonard once again proved a great substitute, Ciara Brennan and Lauren Normanly were our scorers in chief for the year and despite getting some extra attention from the teams we have played, they have left every defense with nightmares from the goals they have created from nothing all year. They are scoring machines off both left and right feet. Both are only 11 but play with the assurance and style of veteran senior players. Emma Hegarty was our star utility player and rose to the occasion no matter where she was played, fitting in seamlessly in backs or forwards and chipping in with vital scores too. Emilee Marino in her first year playing Gaelic has been a revelation wining crucial balls and keeping the scoreboard ticking, Grace Cunnie is another who has rapidly improved over the year and made vital plays in every game she was introduced. Two of our youngest players may be small in stature but are huge in heart, Aoife Walsh and Katie Hegarty were great decoys and every team underestimated them. One of the best scores on the year came in the championship game against Eastern Harps when Aoife went on a mazy solo run drew the defender an off loaded to Katie to score her fourth Goal! Every single girl contributed handsomely to the great record of 17 games undefeated in the year and winning the first u12 A double for the club. They represented the club fantastically and their commitment and sportsmanship continues the great tradition of our club. A word of thanks to all who have helped in the year especially the senior players Katie Walsh, Anna Corcoran, Claire McIntyre and Niamh Kelly  who came and coached over the last 2 years, Aisling Egan for ensuring they always got the limelight they deserved and Claire Colleran who might be miles away but had a word of support for every game. Thanks to all the others in the Club who have supported us all along but especially to the fantastic crowd who came along to Tourlestrane on Saturday, it was a fairy tale ending to the year and made extra special for the girls to win it on our own patch with the vocal home support.

 

Our Junior A team have qualified for the Lola Montez Junior A Championship Final following their 4-13 to 1-7 victory over Eastern Harps in Cloonacool on Saturday night last. Joint Senior Managers, Eamonn O'Hara and Gerry McGowan, were the lead talisman. Eamonn hitt the Harps net on 3 occasions and scored a further 2 points while Gerry raised the white flag 6 times. Ruari Brennan also raised the green flag with a great goal and Barry Kirrane, Kenny Gavigan, Ciara Walsh and Enda Kelly all contributing scores to the great win. The team now play St. Michaels in the final of the competition on a date to be confirmed.

Our Senior men were the last team in action over this when they played old rivals Eastern Harps in Markievicz Park on Sunday evening in the Belfry Senior Championship Semi Final. Tourlestrane played against the wind and got off to a great start with John Francis Carr hitting the back of the net in the 5th minute of play. The Gaughan brothers accounted for 5 points in the first half, Liam with 3, Gary with 2 before John Quinn slotted past the Harps keeper, leaving the scoreboard reading 2-5 to 0-5 at the half hour mark. Tourlestrane drove on from this in the second half with the aid of the wind. 3 points coming from the youngest of the Gaughan trio, 1-2 coming from the foot of John Quinn, 2 points from John Marren and a further point from Gary Gaughan. At the full time whistle the score board read Tourlestrane 3-13. The team now face St. Mary's in the Senior Football Championship Final on Sunday the 2nd of October.   

 

Our U-16 girls had a well-earned win over Eastern Harps on Wednesday night when they travelled to Kesh for the first round of the championship. A hatrick of goals from Laura Surlis and Tara Walsh paved the way for the victory. Sarah Cunnie's outstanding work rate at midfield ensured that our forwards had plenty of chances in front of goal. Ellen Bailey also gave a woman of the match performance at centre back covering a lot of ground and helping out the hard working defence. 

 

Having come through a tough encounter with Curry in the Minor Championship Quarter Final, our Minors face Castleconnor in the Semi Final of the competition at 6.15pm in St. Brendan's Park, Castleconnor, on Friday evening. Please come out and support the team. 

 

On the back of their Martin Brennan Memorial Cup win, our Senior Hurlers play Coolera/Strandhill in round 5 of the Senior Hurling Championship at 6pm this Saturday in Ransboro Park.  

 

Congratulations to former Senior Ladies Player Laura Neary who is making a name for herself with some outstanding performances throughout the year with Padraic Pearses, Melbourne. The team won the League and lost out narrowly in the Championship final. From these campaigns, Laura was named Best Newcomer of the Year and also earned herself a place on the Victorian State team. Laura played for the Victorian State team in the All Australian Tournament from the  28th-31st of August. Well done to Laura on the huge achievement. Congratulations to Yvonne Kelly who was also part of the Padraic Pearse team.
