Sligo captain Johnny Martyn lifts the 2014 Connacht JFC Cup

Sligo footballer Johnny Martyn has accepted an invitation to become part of the county senior footballers' backroom team.

Recently, the tough tackling defender suffered his second stroke in two years as he was warming up to come on against Leitrim in the FBD League.

Martyn's playing career has been put on hold for the time being, but Sligo manager Niall Carew revealed in his weekly column for the Sligo Champion that the 34-year-old had agreed to come on board.

"I met Johnny for lunch last Tuesday and of course when I asked how the form was, he replied like all Sligo men, I'm sound," writes Carew.

"Johnny Martyn certainly owes nothing to Sligo football, club or county and I for one was very eager to keep him on board.

"So when I popped the question in relation to him getting involved with our backroom team, of course as a true Gael, Johnny accepts. So I look forward to working with Johnny and we are thrilled to have him on board."
