Drumcliffe Rosses Point GAA Club Notes

August 17, 2015

There was disappointment for the men's senior team on Sunday at Oxfield as they lost to Curry in their penultimate league match on a scoreline of 1-12 to 0-12. Despite having the upper hand for much of the hour, a succession of wides cost the team dearly in the end. We now need at least a draw in our final league match against Calry/St Joseph's to be sure of our senior Division 1 status.

The Sligo ladies team's run in the All-Ireland intermediate football championship came to an end in Birr last Saturday against Waterford. Commiserations to club players Rachel Monaghan and Orla McGowan. The county side's exit means the Intermediate Club Championship resumes this weekend with the DRP ladies taking on Owenmore Gaels in Collooney in their latest group game.

Our minor girls footballers have enjoyed two recent championship wins - beating Calry/St Joseph's 4-13 to 2-4 and then getting the better of St Nathy's at Oxfield last Monday evening on a scoreline of 4-9 to 2-7. Both games produced superb team performances with a really strong work ethic evident in both encounters. Squad and scorers in both games: Zara Mulrooney, Joan Brennan, Rachael Oates, Shirley Nicholson, Ella McDermott, Lisa McLoughlin, Michelle McNamara 0-1, Aimee Oates, Ciara Redmond 1-4,, Denise Regan, 0-2, Kate Keyes, Keeley Greene, Emily McCormack 0-3,Amanda Healy 3-2, , Sinead Regan 0-4, Roisin Healy 2-0, Ciara Goonan 0-2 and Laura Oates 2-6. We play Eastern Harps on Tuesday evening (18th) in Keash.

The minor boys footballers opened their championship campaign last Friday with a draw against Enniscronne/Kilglass on a scoreline of 6-10 a-piece. Despite being without several players, they had led by 12 points at one stage. Next up is Owenmore Gaels this Thursday evening at 7.

The U14 Benbulben Gaels hurlers enjoyed a comprehensive 5-7 to 1-1 win over Naomh Eoin in the championship last Friday and and are set to qualify for the 'A' final for the first time. Our Féile players travelled to Croke Park last Sunday to watch a thrilling All-Ireland hurling semi-final between Galway and Tipperary.

Good luck to our U12 hurlers who play play Naomh Eoin in the A1 final at Markievicz Park on Friday evening at 7pm.  Please come and support these young hurlers as they bid to retain the cup they won for the first time last year.

Congratulations to U10 club player Joe Campbell who won gold in the Community Games Boys U10 Art model making in Athlone at the weekend. Joe's hurling coaches will be chuffed to hear his winning entry was a model feature the Kilkenny and Tipperary hurling colours. A picture of his work will appear on the club's facebook page this week.

The annual Sligo GAA Race Day takes place this evening at Cleveragh racecourse (first race at 5:30pm). The card will feature a novelty event after the third race when  a club member from every Sligo club take part a one-mile race on the main course.

Finally, a special word of thanks to everybody who volunteered to help staff our Fleadh Car Parks on Clarion Road last weekend.
