Drumcliffe Rosses Point GAA Club Notes

August 10, 2015

It may have coincided with the official opening of the Fleadh but last Sunday's Championship match at Oxfield was a special occasion for the club. It was the first men's senior club championship match to be hosted at Oxfield - and our senior team marked this milestone in style with a 12 points to 11 win over Eastern Harps. Well done to manager Stephen Ward and his players. The team had trailed by 0-5 to 0-4 at half-time despite playing with the wind. However a fine second-half effort saw the lads turn things around with Paul Logan and John Bellew both producing fine displays in attack, while at the back Sean Peyton's tigerish play and Gary Feeney's composure and distribution when introduced in the second half were also key factors in the win. The senior team return to league action this Sunday with a home match against Curry.
Good luck to our minor boys footballers who play Enniscronne/Kilglass in the Championship this Thursday evening in Quigibar at 7pm.
Well done to everybody involved with the boys U14 footballers final championship match on Friday evening. Particular thanks go to our younger players who stepped up to help ensure we could fulfill the fixture. Thanks to all the parents who supported us during the U14 league and championship. There will be an U13 féile competition, starting at the end of August. Training resumes on Wednesday evening (12th) at 7pm.
Our U12 boys played their final league game on Wednesday evening in Scarden against Eastern Harps. Well done to all players involved this season and also to their parents for their effort. We will be taking part in both the U11 and U13 leagues in September.

We sent our group of older U10 footballers to participate in the Fingallians annual underage tournament in Dublin last Saturday. Clubs from Dublin, Donegal, Carlow and Meath also took part. We played five matches in what was a very enjoyable tournament. Our thanks to both the host club and to our own 'Fingallian' Declan O'Brien, who organised our place in the tournament. Afterwards, the day was topped off with a trip to Croke Park to watch the Mayo v Donegal and Tyrone v Monaghan All-Ireland quarter-finals. A special note of thanks to all the mums who travelled and provided the 'in-flight' entertainment throughout the day!

The club will be in charge of one of the Fleadh car parks this weekend (Fri 14th - Sun 16th) as a fundraiser. We need about 30 volunteers to help staff the IT Sligo Pay & Display car park on Clarion Road over the three days. Volunteers will work in pairs with the rota will be assigned three-hour slots starting on Friday morning at 9am. If you can spare three hours, please contact Gerard Carroll on 087 3512685 to book your slot.

The annual Sligo GAA Race Day takes place at Cleveragh on Tuesday 18th.

In addition to the seven-race card, there will be a novel event this year. The organisers are inviting every club to nominate one (human) runner, dressed in their club colours, to take part in a one-mile race on the course. If you know a club member who would be a suitable 'thoroughbred' for this unique event, see sligogaa.ie for more details.
