Rooney relieved

Sligo manager Aidan Rooney admits that he was relieved to see his charges edge past Leitrim in the Connacht MFC quarterfinal.

The final scoreline of 4-08 to 0-12 doesn't tell the whole story of this match as Sligo had to defend for long periods of the game.

And Rooney admitted to the Sligo Champion that they are just glad to be through to the provincial semi-final where they will face Roscommon in Dr Hyde Park on Friday evening.

"Coming to a place like Carrick-on-Shannon and winning is brilliant, we're over the moon. I knew and we knew that this was going to be a formidable challenge and I knew we were going to get a very difficult game," said Rooney.

"We got out of jail. Leitrim will probably feel that they let it go a little bit. We didn't play up to what we can or what we've played for so far. For these lads it's their first championship win in quite a while so we got a victory and that will give us something to build on this week."
