Sligo minor manager Aidan Rooney hailed his players following their Connacht minor football league success.

The Yeats County lifted the trophy for the first time in 31 years when they defeated Mayo in the last round of games last Saturday.

Sligo had been impressive throughout the campaign and they were certainly the form side as Rooney told the Sligo Champion that the players' efforts paid off.

"These lads have worked very, very hard and now we've put ourselves at fighting weight with all the other teams in Connacht, and that was the whole aim of this year and indeed the past four or five years to build this sort of platform to work on," said Rooney.

"I'm delighted for the lads, and I'm delighted with the way the team performed in tough conditions, the way in which they had to battle to win the game and that shows the spirit in the group."
