Sligo captain Mark Breheny admits that it is an 'honour' to lead the side into action this year.

Breheny was chosen as captain by new manager Niall Carew and the long serving forward is determined to lead by example throughout this year's campaign.

"I was delighted to be asked to be captain," Breheny told the Sligo Champion. "For me, it is a huge honour to captain Sligo for the first time at senior level and I am hoping for a good year."

Sligo picked up their first competitive win of the year last Sunday when defeating GMIT in the FBD League and Breheny is already looking ahead to the league opener against Limerick.

"A lot of players are recovering from injury and they will gradually get back, hopefully for the first National League game against Limerick in February.

"I'm looking forward to that, it should be a good game. We had a good tussle with Limerick in the All-Ireland qualifiers last year and we beat them narrowly."
