Westmeath 3-12

Sligo 1-10

Westmeath boosted their Allianz Football League Division 3 promotion hopes with what was ultimately a comfortable victory over struggling Sligo in Collooney.

Leading by 0-9 to 0-7 at the interval, Jack Cooney's charges turned the screw in the second half with goals from John Heslin, Ger Egan (penalty) and substitute Noel O'Reilly to climb to seven points on the table and leave Sligo still without a point at the bottom and staring at relegation to Division 4 for 2020.

The sides were level on 0-4 apiece before two Luke Loughlin points gave the visitors a lead they wouldn't relinquish. Ronan O'Toole and Egan were also on target, with efforts from Pat Hughes and Niall Murphy at the other end leaving it all to play for in the second half.

Loughlin and Egan had further points on the restart before Heslin fisted home the opening goal in the 47th minute after Loughlin had done all the spadework. Jamie Gonoud then won a penalty which fellow Tyrrellspass clubman Egan converted before O'Reilly palmed home the Lake County's third major.

Substitute Adrian Marren grabbed a consolation goal for the home side in injury-time.
