Cooney not taking Sligo for granted

Westmeath manager Jack Cooney has stressed that there is no chance his players will be complacent when facing pointless Sligo at the weekend.

The Midlanders produced an excellent display to defeat Laois in last Sunday’s clash at TEG Cusack Park and this keeps them firmly in the hunt for promotion from Division 3.

Sligo have lost all four games to date including a fifteen-point defeat to Louth last weekend, which should see Westmeath go into the contest as strong favourites.

Nonetheless, Cooney is in no mood to let his players rest on their laurels and speaking to the Westmeath Independent, he states that they will be up for the game as normal.

“We have another tough assignment next Sunday in Sligo. We’re focusing on that now straight away. We have no injury worries except maybe the manager and a few selectors,” he joked.

“I’m a great supporter of the way that the league is set up. I thought that was a very evenly-contested game (against Laois) and it didn’t lack passion or intensity from both teams.

“We were very disappointed coming down from Newry as I thought we should have got something out of that game. The lads are very proud to play for Westmeath.”
