Drumcliffe/Rosses club notes

August 13, 2018

There was disappointment for the senior men's footballers at Kent Park on Saturday evening in their opening Group 2 match of the 2018 Belfry senior football championship. Despite leading by four points at one stage, a strong second-half from opponents Coolera/Strandhill saw them run out comprehensive 2-8 to 0-7 winners. The team managed just two scores in the second half in what was a below-par display. There is still hope however - as a win in our second and concluding group match against St Molaise Gaels (also at Kent Park) in two weeks time (Aug 25th) will earn us a place in the knockout stages. Saturdays's team and scorers: Ronan McCormack, Aaron McCormack, John McGowan, Ciaran McLoughlin, John Harvey, Dara Long, Seán Power, Brian Monaghan 0-1, Cian Lally, Neil Ewing (Capt) 0-1, Paul Logan 0-4 (3f), Niall Canning, Jamie Gillen, Niall Collery, Kevin Davey. Subs used: Oisín O'Reilly for Kevin Davey, Eoin Gaughan for Niall Collery, Brian Óg Murphy 0-1 for John Harvey. Other panel members: Justin Lyons, Tommy Finnegan, David Collins, Hugh Kisby, Alan O'Dowd, Joseph Keyes, Tom Armstong, Lorcan Long, John Hester, David Kerrigan.

Manager: Fergal O'Flaherty.

The Junior men's team travelled to Quigabar last Sunday for their opening match in the Lola Montez 'B' championship and recorded a comprehensive 6-17 to 0-2 victory. They host Castleconnor in the second group game this Saturday evening in Oxfield at 7pm.

Several members of our Under 12, 14 and 16 football teams made the trip to Croke Park last Sunday to take in the Monaghan-Tyrone All-Ireland football semi-final. A very enjoyable day was had by all. Our thanks to the various team coaches, led by Jimmy Smith, who organised the trip.

Despite being without a couple of key players, our girls U12 footballers put in a fine display against St Michael's last Friday evening before eventually losing a close game by eight scores to four.

Our ladies intermediate footballers' opening championship match away to CT Gaels has been put back until Sunday 26th at 10am on account of the county team's involvement in the All-Ireland semi-finals next weekend.

Best wishes to club players Sinead Regan and Michelle McNamara who are part of the Sligo ladies team who take on Tyrone in this Saturday's TG4 All-Ireland intermediate football semi-final at 4pm. The club extends its sympathy to Michelle and the McNamara family following the recent passing of Michelle's granny Anne Cawley.

Hard luck to the DRP girls minor footballers who were narrrowly beaten in a cracking 'A' championship contest last Thursday evening when Tourlestrane emerged victors by two points - 5-11 to 5-9. 10 members of the DRP minor panel returned from made day-return journeys from the Gaeltacht in order to fulfil the fixtures. Special thanks go to the mums and dads who provided the lengthy taxi services! Qualification for the knockout stages now looks to be a long shot but the team will continue their campaign with a group match against Eastern Harps this Wednesday evening in Oxfield at 6:30pm.

The girls U14 team play Tourlestrane in the championship this Tuesday evening in Oxfield. Throw-in: 7pm.

Our boys U16 footballers enjoyed two victories in the 'A' championship last week. On Monday, they had too much for Geevagh/St Michael's at Oxfield on a final scoreline of 2-21 to 1-3. Then on Friday evening, they recorded an impressive 3-11 to 1-10 success over St Mary's at Kent Park to leave them in strong contention for a place in the final. The team play top of the table St Molaise Gaels on Monday evening.

The boys U14 footballers will travel to Curry this Friday evening for their next 'B' championship game at 7pm.

Any paid up club member who wishes to have their name entered in the club's All-Ireland hurling final ticket draw this week is asked attend the draw which will be made during the week in Davis's Restaurant, Drumcliffe. Confirmation of the date and time will appear on our social media platforms shortly.

Good luck to the DRP U12 hurlers who will contest the 'B' league final this Tuesday evening in Scarden when they take on Naomh Eoin at 7:15pm.

Hard luck to Benbulben Gaels U14 hurlers who lost out to Western Gaels in the championship last week by 4-8 to 0-9. The minor hurlers are away to Tourlestrane in the championship on Thursday evening.

Our new Club Lotto Tickets are still on sale. Members/supporters are asked to return their completed tickets to club officers ASAP.
