Connacht MFC: Rossies and Galway set-up final date

July 06, 2018

Hyde Park, Roscommon.

Roscommon will face Galway in the Connacht minor football championship final next Friday night after both sides came through their respective semi-finals tonight with plenty to spare.

The Rossies put in a five-star display at Dr Hyde Park to down Sligo by 5-18 to 1-13, bagging three second-half majors to settle the issue.

Gavin Duffy's goal had seen the Yeats men lead by 1-3 to 0-4 after the opening nine minutes but James Fitzpatrick had the ball in their net just a minute later and from there the hosts never trailed again.

Eoghan Derwin fired in the winners' second on 12 minutes and points from Shane Cunnane, Derwin (3) and Fitzpatrick steered them towards a 2-10 to 1-10 lead at the interval.

Derwin's fine display continues with a well-struck penalty five minutes into the restart and after that there was no way back for Sligo, as Cunnane pushed the gap to eight prior to Robbie Dolan rifling home goal number four.

Ruaidhiri Fallon burst through to raise the final green flag off the back of a fine finish before Dolan and Gavin Duffy swapped the final two scores.

In Carrick-on-Shannon, Galway inflicted a 4-17 to 1-11 defeat on Leitrim, having banged in three first-half goal to lead by 11 points at the break.
