The drawn out saga of who will manage Roscommon senior footballers in 2017 looks set to come to an end this week.

Kevin McStay is the only candidate in the running and even though it was reported by a national newspaper that the players were divided on McStay taking the job himself.

However, the Roscommon Herald reports that following Nigel Dineen's decision to withdraw from the race, the path is clear for McStay to take over.

This year, the Mayo native was jointly in charge with Fergal O'Donnell, but the latter stood down at the end of the campaign, stating that the partnership could not go on.

Dineen released a strongly worded statement claiming that the process of selecting a manager was not a fair one.
