Clare star Gary Brennan says he's looking forward to lining-out against former coach and mentor Liam McHale on Saturday.

The Banner men take on Roscommon on Saturday for a place in the quarter-finals of the All-Ireland SFC and speaking to the Irish Independent this week Brennan had nothing but good things to say about McHale, who has been a selector under Kevin McStay and Fergal O'Donnell with the Rossies this year.

"I enjoyed working with Liam, he was always a very bright presence and encouraged us to go out and play and express ourselves," Brennan told the Irish Independent.

"He gave me a lot of confidence at the time but I know equally he's a good man to give his own players confidence.

"He's in the other corner now so we'll have a chat after the game, I'm sure but we won't be talking too much this week. I learned a lot from him about the mentality of approaching a game and he was a man who was well able to win ball himself so he has definitely encouraged me to go and express that part of my game."

As for the game itself, Brennan is hoping Clare can continue their remarkable season by taking another big scalp in Salthill this weekend.

"I've been in situations where we've been really questioned as to whether we should be competing at this level and it's nice to be looking forward to this challenge," he said.
