Roscommon's Adrian Murphy believes that they can cause a surprise against Derry in the Christy Ring Cup opener.

The Galway native has been plying his trade with the Rossies for the last four years and he is enjoying his hurling more than ever.

Derry will provide a stern test for the Connacht side on Saturday afternoon, but Murphy stressed to the Roscommon Herald that they have been improving as they year has gone on.

"We'll go in as heavy underdogs against Derry," said Murphy. "We've got better and better. Our performances have gradually improved throughout the league.

"We gave Monaghan a good beating in the league final and Tyrone a week before that. We took the foot off the gas a bit against Donegal after leading by ten points, but I was always confident we had another gear to go.

"Derry will be very strong. There's definitely another level in us. If we can play as good as we can on the day, we can beat Derry."
