U14 camogie

The Roscommon Gaels U14 camogie team set off at 8am on Saturday morning last to attend a mini féile competition in County Galway.  21 players appeared sleepy but smiling at the Hyde centre to take on the tribes and others.  This Gaels team had narrowly been defeated for a place in the national féile competition but that didn't dampen their spirits and they travelled to Cappatagle outside Ballinasloe to play Shamrocks, Cappatagle, Eire Og and Kilmallock.  They then travelled to Sylan outside Tuam to play Kilmordaly, Tuam and Sylane.  Seven fantastic games winning four.  This was a fantastic opportunity for the girls to get camogie games in a county where we only have 6 other teams to play against.  Roscommon camogie lining up against Galway, Limerick and Clare teams and winning is a sight to behold, the Gaels colours really standing out on the pitch.  The weather was mixed, one of those days where there were four seasons in one day which was evidenced by the photo of the jerseys hanging across the fence to dry between games.  How could we let the girls out to play in wet jerseys?   It is true that volunteering to help out with a team is not just about coaching there is jersey drying also!!

A big thank you to Tom O Farrell, Sinead Killeen, Trish Killion, Sheila Geraghty and Imelda Quinn for travelling with the girls and making the day happen. U14 camogie training continues on Tuesday night next 7 -8pm and we are hoping to get a place in the final of the league competition in early July. 

 

Congratulations to Adam Connolly who won the County Feile Skills competition last Saturday. It's a marvellous achievement. Well done also to Thomas Connolly and Eoghan Keaveny who represented the club with distinction. Thanks to all the lads who took part in the U-14 match to mark Family Fun Day on Sunday, they all enjoyed being in mixed teams with the camogie players. Well done to St. Coman's Wood on winning their Cumann na mBunscol final and hard luck to Gaelscoil de hIde who performed gallantly in their final. It's great to see so many of our players hurling so well.

U10 Football

Well done to our U10 girls who played their 1st game of the year against a strong Strokestown team this morning. Well done to all the girls. Training continues on Wednesday next at 6.30pm in Lisnamult.

U14 Ladies Football

Our U14 Ladies played neighbours Oran on Monday last in the Div 1 Semi Final on Monday evening last. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be our girl’s day. We were four points up at half time. Our girls were tiring in the second half and Oran was the hungrier team on the day and won by ironically four points.

Training Continues Wednesdays 6.30-8pm and Fridays 6.30-8pm. The U14 team are adapting really well to playing the larger pitch and longer game. Overall the team has worked really hard since the beginning of the year and there has been very good attendance at training and matches. The championship will be commencing in July and we have Feile last week in June, so a very busy period for the team is about to commence and we hope that parents continue to support the games as much as they can. The team is developing well and hopefully into a hard working committed bunch of young girls the club and their parents can be very proud of.

U14 County

The Best of Luck to Ava, Jenny, Shauna, Zara, Deckie and Shelly in their All Ireland Semi Final on Saturday in Banagher v Limerick.

U9 and U10 Football

Our U10 and U9 footballers travelled to turloughmore this morning to play Clare Galway and Annaghdown. We had 35 lads, each playing 3 games and they were absolutely brilliant. A very enjoyable morning and thanks to the parents for driving these young lads around the country. Training continues Tuesday evening. Keep up the great work lads.

School Link

Our Club – Primary School Link Programme has finished for this school year.

Thank You to School Principals, Orla Cunningham, Una Feely and Colette Brennan and their staff in Gael Scoil de Hide, St Comans Wood and Kilteevan NS.

Thank You also to our Coaches who took time out to give the coaching sessions in the schools.

The programme was rolled out to Junior Infant Classes and the emphasis of the programme was FUN FUN FUN.

We included ABC/RJT activities and we also introduced Football and Hurleys into the sessions across the year.

The children loved the sessions and the progress they made was fantastic.

As part of our 60th anniversary celebrations in 2019 the official opening of our Lisnamult facilities, took place over last weekend and were a huge success.  Great crowds attended the various matches, activities, presentations, family fun day, the opening ceremony and blessing as well as the launch of our Roscommon Gaels All Star team. 

Each and every event was well organised and attended, generating a great buzz in Lisnamult with great crowds of members, players, coaches, officers – both current and past, supporters, sponsors and generations of Roscommon Gaels families in attendance.   

The All Stars team was launched on Friday night in the Hyde by our Special Olympians; Bernie Carr, Hugh Naughton and Jude Gleeson.  There was an inspiring feel good factor at this event with the children, their parents and the Gaels helpers all participating in activities, games, karaoke etc.  It was an incredibly enjoyable evening for all involved and will continue every Friday for the next 8 weeks in the Hyde centre from 6-7pm. 

Friday also saw our Junior footballers beat Boyle with a 5 goal bonanza in the second half of the Junior league. Well done to Davy Kelly and his Junior panel.

Saturday saw a win against Michael Glaveys in the Senior football league.  Well done to Liam McNeill and the senior panel and management.  Club Presidents Barry Molloy and Maire Benedetti presented the under-6 academy boys and girls with their club kit at half time.   

This was followed by a thoroughly enjoyable 2018 club awards presentation in the Oscars function room in the Hollywood.  Congratulations to all the recipients on their well-deserved awards following a great year’s participation, hard work and representation of their club in the best manner possible. The following were the 2018 award recipients;

Those in attendance had a pleasant evening particularly the Mc Guinness family who caught up with old friends and current members, exchanging great stories of memorable times past.

Sunday involved activities from 11.30am onwards. The blustery conditions did not deter the enthusiasm and crowds which arrived for the mini camogie, football and hurling games at u8, u10, and u12.  The academy boys and girls gave a demonstration of their hurling and football skills developed to date and were there in great numbers with their many coaches and helpers.  They were the real stars of the day.  

The u14 feile teams were presented with their tops for feile sponsored by John Keane & Sons Volkwagen Roscommon and the girls teams were sponsored by Dr. Elizabeth Sweeney-Mc Sharry GP.   

The u16 and minor players then participated in a penalty shootout and a crossbar challenge which was won by Rodhan Dowd and Ellen Biesty.  

Lisnamult was a hive of activity with various fun activities on the training pitch, face painting and a BBQ, as well as other refreshments in the marquee.  The senior footballers manned the ice cream stand of which the proceeds will be donated to Roscommon division of the Down Syndrome association.  

The opening ceremony suffered the brunt of the weather with a heavy shower but it did not take from the significance of the opening and blessing. Club Presidents – Barry Molloy, Maire Benedetti, Chairpersons of Roscommon Co GAA and hurling Boards Seamus Sweeney and Christy McDermott, CEO of Roscommon Co Council Eugene Cummins and Co Councillors, TDs, Fr Cullen and Fr. Eugene McLoughlin as well as other invited guests, friends, players were in attendance. Thank you to everyone for their contribution to this monumental event. 

Various people addressed the assembled crowd and players Gustavo Rodrigues read the GAA club manifesto accompanied by Diarmuid Fleming on the violin.  A presentation was made to the four men who put their names to back the Gaels loan to buy Lisnamult in 2007- Harry Hoare, Tom Fitzmaurice, Frank Durkin and Jimmy Menton. Without the foresight and vision of these men we would not have the facilities we have today in Lisnamult.  We have paid the final payment of this loan in October 2018

and we owe these men a huge debt of gratitude for grasping the nettle and purchasing what has become Roscommon Gaels true home.  The ceremony ended with Fr. John Cullen and Fr Eugene blessing the facilities. 

Thank you to the people whose skill, craft and time in the development of our dressing rooms and sports wall and have realised fabulous and much complimented facilities for our club, our local schools, our community and for generations of Gaels to come.

The weekend concluded in Lisnamult with Junior hurling match v Athleague, an u12 football match v St. Barrys and a very exciting LGFA U14 co semi-final v Oran which went right to the wire! Sadly the club saw no victory on the Monday but it concluded a wonderful weekend to celebrate our official opening. 

The success of the weekend would not have been possible without the help and work of many club members, people and businesses.

A special word of thanks to Philip Mullen, our Club Parks Committee and other volunteers for the preparation of the Lisnamult grounds which looked absolutely fantastic. It took a lot of work, often in poor weather, to get the place in such good condition. Thank you to all who put in a mammoth effort to achieve this.

Thanks also to the many many club people who volunteered and helped with the activities, car parking, stewarding, refreshments, shop, set up of pitches/activities, refs, coaches, clean up and all that it took to make this weekend happen.  Volunteers aren’t paid- not because they are worthless but because they are priceless. They are the life blood of our organisation and without them we could not function.  

A warm thanks to all of our members and invited guests for attending the opening weekend and to Barry Molloy for officially opening the facilities. 

It was a very proud day for our club to celebrate the achievement of the facilities we currently have in Lisnamult -two full size pitches (one floodlit), 3 juvenile pitches, training areas, sports wall, 4 dressing rooms, ref changing rooms, public toilets, baby changing facilities and a kitchenette with an air to water sustainable heating system. To have officially opened them in our 60th  anniversary year makes it all the more memorable. Lisnamult is a work in progress and we have set out a number of developments; car park, astro turf at sports wall, floodlights, spectator stand to be achieved over the coming few years.  This will require everyone getting their shoulder to the wheel of fund raising and supporting these initiatives to further improve our facilities for all in Lisnamult.  

It was a magnificent weekend for our club from a historic, celebratory and social point of view which will live long in the memory of all who were there.  Onwards and upwards for Roscommon Gaels GAA club  “Ní neart go cur le cheile”.

Roscommon Gaels encourage use of reusable cups/mugs and ditch single use plastic cups and water bottles

Roscommon Gaels is launching its’ new initiative to reduce single use plastic cups and encourage the use of reusable plastic mugs at our Club. We are delighted to be taking such a positive and proactive step. Although Croke Park introduced a ban in it’s stadium this has not been rolled out at Club level. Single use plastic cups are a great source of plastic pollution and litter. As a method to encourage the use of reusable plastic cups Roscommon Gaels are asking all members to donate a plastic reusable cup so that we can do away with the use of disposable ones. It is estimated that 26 million tonnes of waste plastic is produced in Europe annually with experts claiming that, by 2050, we could have more plastics than fish in our oceans. Ireland is the worst offender when it comes to plastic waste, with over 60kg being generated per person per year. As a thriving GAA sports club Roscommon Gaels GAA knows that hydration is an essential part of playing sport, we know too that unfortunately single use plastic cups and water bottles are the most common item littered on the Club premises. As a way to address this and encourage the use of reusable Cups and water bottles Roscommon Gaels is encouraging the public to get tap happy and switch to reusable water bottles and reusable cups, as concerns on plastic pollution increase. It’s a great privilege to be able to play a small part in influencing young peoples habits around the use of plastics. I’m delighted that Roscommon Gaels has stepped up to reduce plastic-bottle waste, which ultimately will help to keep Roscommon streets and water free of waste plastic.’ We are asking Managers, players, parents, supporters and visitors to our club to use reusable cups and water bottles going forward, refill them at our outdoor tap and make sure to bring them home with you!

Roscommon Gaels All Stars

Roscommon Gaels All Stars team has launched with 14 players attending so far. This is a new initiative which invites children with special and additional needs to come and learn to kick and throw a ball or swing a hurl. Primary School aged children from near and far have signed up to 8 weeks of fun and enjoyment. As a club we are exceptionally proud of our team of All Stars. The launch on the 31st May by our local special Olympians Bernie Carr, Hugh Naughton and Jude Gleeson showed our commitment to provide sport to all individuals. We are sure that they are going to reap the rewards of being part of a GAA club and participation in a team sport. We are still accepting new members.
