Clann na nGael manager Fergal Shine feels that the SFC final against neighbours St Brigid’s is good for the game.
The sides meet in a county final for the first time since 1997 and although they have always been great rivals, meeting in the championship decider adds to intensity.
Shine has guided his charges to the county final on the back of an impressive performance in the semi-final, but he knows that they will have to step it up even more against the defending champions.
“All of this kind of stuff is good for the club,” Shine told the Westmeath Independent. “There are so many kids here on a Sunday morning. They want to be up here on days like this in 15 or 20 years’ time and that’s what it is all about.
“But we’re trying to keep our own lads grounded and keep telling them that it is a game of football at the end of the day. Granted, it’s a county final and we haven’t been in too many of them of late.
“Hopefully the experienced senior players will keep the younger lads on a level playing field; we can’t afford to get swept up in all the outside stuff this week.”
