A big Thank You to Larry Brennan who has very generously sponsored new Training Tops for the Roscommon Gaels U9 & U10 Football Team’s. These tops will ensure that our lads look their very best when arriving for their forth coming games.

Roscommon Gaels 2-03 St Dominic’s 1-06.

Last Saturday 22nd of September, saw what we thought would be the end to the U12’s 2018 season with a home game advantage against Dominic’s in the County A Final.  Excitement was in the air as we began the game with a peach of a goal from Shauna Walsh and soon after a superb point from Martha McSharry.  Dominic’s got back into the game to leave a score of Roscommon Gaels 1-01 St Dominics 1-02 at half time.

The Gaels were not long levelling up from a Siofra Hession free in the second half.

Each and every member of the panel fought their little hearts out for the Amber and Purple jersey.  With 5 minutes  to go and 4 points down a cracker of a goal from Siofra Hession left one point between the two teams.  The game continued to be a battle before Siofra Hession pointed a free to earn us a draw in what was a cracker of a game. Our girls must be admired for their hard work as they fought hard for every ball in a tough battle. It was with all this determination that got them the well deserved draw.  A huge thank you Flemming’s Super Valu who provided socks to the panel, which they were thrilled with. We would also like to thank everyone who came out and supported the girls.  The replay will take place next Saturday date and time to be confirmed and as always support is welcome for this great bunch of girls.

U14 Football:

The Div 1 final was set for Sunday 23rd in Lisnamult, against the favourites Brigid’s. We began brightly; dominating possession, Brigid’s then found their rhythm, and with the aid of three fortunate goals were well ahead at half time. In the Second half Brigid’s didn’t score for 23 mins and our girls held possession but were unlucky in converting scores.  However we doubters began to turn into believers after several great scores from us saw the whole complexion of the game change to a two point deficit. We attacked from everywhere, Brigids, we sensed, were getting very anxious. But the comeback ran out of time and Brigids ploughed on and won by 10 points at the final whistle.  We were all immediately devastated but this disappeared over time when we realised just how much we had achieved during the year. To get to a Division 1 County Final after winning a Div 3A Final last year was beyond all our expectations.

The management would like to thank all the players for their effort commitment and energy throughout the year and the many sponsors along the way. 2019 is just around the corner and we have no doubt that this team will continue to represent themselves and Roscommon Gaels with pride and distinction.

THANK YOU

A huge thank you to O’Connor Waste Management Ltd who sponsored a set of training tops for our Under-14 girls team. Pictured is Tommy O’Connor presenting the jerseys to the manager Paul Beisty and captain Hollie Harkin also in picture is mentor Sean Murly and Tommy’s daughter Eimear O’Connor.

U10 Hurling:

Our U10 hurlers participated in the Frank Young Tournament, hosted by Southern Gaels, in Athlone Friday evening last.

Our U9 team played in a Challenge match against Southern Gaels at the same venue. Both the tournament & challenge ensured maximum game time for all our hurlers, with participationbeing a key goal of the U10 management teams goals this year.

Our U9 team performed strongly in a 40 minute match and we were delighted with their performance. All players received medals and treats after the game.

Our U10 team entered the Frank Young Tournament, facing opponents including Craughwell-Galway / Southern Gaels-Westmeath / Fr. Daltons-Westmeath

During our first group game, we faced Craughwell who were very strong, dominating possession and scoring some fantastic scores throughout. We regrouped for our second game against Southern Gaels and came out on top. Our final game, for a place in the Cup Final was against Fr Daltons. Our players stuck to the task in hand and performed strongly to take the 3rd game. Due to our strong performances in our group games, we were drawn against the strong Craughwell team in the Cup Final.

Our lads, comprising of all U10s and a number of U9's started strongly and dominated proceedings in the first half. The performance of the season. At half time we lead by the smallest of margins. In the second half, Craughwell took some good scores and came out on top in the end. It was a fantastic game to witness. Our hurlers were fantastic and there is no shame in coming out second best to a team like Craughwell. The turn around from the first game was enjoyable for all involved. Well done all!

Special thanks to parents who have continued to support the development of our young hurlers in the club by committing to travel to these games. It is very important that we continue to play as many games as possible to continue the strong progress these committed bunch of lads have made all season.

Next up........ Our outdoor season will wrap up in the coming week on Saturday September 29th, where we will host an internal Roscommon Gaels only U10 tournament, where the winners will be presented with a Cup. All Gaels who attended any hurling session during the year are most welcome to attend. There will be a cup of tea / coffee and a few treats after the games. All players will be presented with a small gift from the U10 coaches after the game. Please be at pitch for 2pm Saturday and meet at the dressing rooms. The games will be played on the main pitch.

There will be no U10 hurling training this Monday, Sept 24th in lieu of the end of season September 29th.
