We are all busy coaching our respective teams. Occasionally it is good to stop and think how we as Coaches can challenge ourselves to improve. Check out the very interesting and informative COACH 10 Model video on the GAA Learning website.

 

 

Coaching tips: 

 

Look to help each athlete achieve their best, no matter what that level is. Not all athletes want to be the world champion.

Be innovative. Be creative. Dare to be different.

Try not to over-coach. You don't need to talk ALL the time.

Never lose confidence in yourself. You can do it!

Encourage your athlete to have ownership of the program.

Maintain good appearance, look like a professional.

Technology is your ally not your enemy. Use it wisely.

When the going gets tough, the tough get going. Mental toughness is still a key component of successful competition.

Adopt the D.R.A.M.A. approach " Do, Record, Analyse, Modify, Act"

Confront problems calmly by talking directly with the athlete - don't rely on rumour, 

 

 

Roscommon Gaels : Nursery Programme 2018 Coaches

A BIG Thank You to our coaches who managed the initial Club Nursery Programme this year. This has been a great success and Declan Hussey in particular deserves credit for firstly identifying a specific need within his U8 Football Group last year and then setting about putting in place the groundwork to launch the Nursery Programme this year.

The challenge over the winter months will be to develop a Nursery Programme covering F&H which is resourced and ready to roll out in spring 2019.   

 

 

 Mouth guards are Mandatory Since January 1st 2014, it has been mandatory for players in all grades to wear a mouth guard in all Gaelic football games and practice sessions. The introduction of this rule has led to a drop of 37% in the number of dental injury claims made via the GAA Injury benefit fund, resulting from incidents in Gaelic football training sessions and matches in grades up to Minor in 2013. At adult level a similar drop of 39% has occurred, proving the benefits of wearing a mouth guard in reducing the risk of dental injuries

 

Key Points • All Gaelic footballers must wear a mouth guard in practice sessions and matches. • It is the responsibility of each individual player to use a mouth guard • A properly fitted mouth guard is the best available protective device for reducing the incidence and severity of sports related dental injuries • Players can be sent-off in a game for not wearing a mouth guard • Players will not be covered under the GAA player injury scheme if they don't comply with the mouth guard rule • No Mouth guard? No Game! U8 & U10 Camogie:  Training continues as normal 6.30pm Friday evenings. 

 

U12 Camogie: 

The U12 Camogie Players hosted a blitz on Friday evening in Lisnamult with teams from Dominic's, Four Roads and Tulsk.  Thanks to Michaela Bracken and Amy McNeill for reffing the matches.  Thanks also to the parents who helped with refreshments afterwards.  On Saturday morning the other U12 camogie team travelled to a blitz in Woodmount where they played Oran and Padraig Pearses.  The blitz matches are now over for the summer and the U12 League resumes for both teams next week end.  Details of the game between the eagles and the hawks will go out this week.  Also all players are reminded to return tickets both the club and county camogie ones back to their coaches or can drop it into McNeill's shop.  Thanks for your continued support of the Club.

 

U13 Camogie:

Our U13 Camogie Girls will be playing Fohenagh/Ahascragh on Friday 10th of August at 7.30pm in Ahascragh. 

 

Junior Camogie:

We play a challenge match this Tuesday in Lisnamult against Sylane, Galway. Throw in is at 7.30pm. Players are asked to be at the dressing rooms no later than 7pm please. Supporters welcome. 

 

 

U8 & U10 Football:  Training continues Wednesday Evenings at 6.30pm.

 

U14 Football: Well done to our U14 girls who defeated Shannon Gaels in the Championship Sunday evening super effort put in by the girls who were defeated by Shannon Gaels in the league final.

 

U16 Football:  U16's are training Monday evening at 7.45pm in the Hyde.

 

Minor Football: Minor training Wednesday evenings from 7.45pm to 9pm.  Minor Championship is starting end of July.

 

Junior Football:  Hard luck to our Junior Girls who were defeated by Four Roads today. 

 

 

 

U9 Football: Our U9 Football lads had a great morning on Saturday last when they took part in a football blitz hosted by St Ciaran's. We had 14 lads who played St Ciarans, St Aidans and Oran. All the lads played brilliant. Training continues Tuesday Evenings at 6.45pm.

 

U10 Football:  Our u10 boys took part in a Go Games blitz in Kiltoom on Saturday last. We had two teams playing and both competed very well and enjoyed the games.

 

 

U14 Football:  Hard luck to our U14 lads who were defeated by Boyle on Thursday. We continue with the Div 1 Championship with a fixture vs. St Brigids on Tuesday evening 07th Aug in Kiltoom. At 7.30pm.

 

Connacht U14 Sean Purcell football Academy.

The Connacht U14 football Sean Purcell academy will take place in the Connacht COE on Saturday August 11th and Roscommon will have two squads.  The best of luck to all our Gaels lads taking part.

 

 

U16 Football:

A big well done to the U16 footballers who secured at least a County Semi Final place with another win yesterday.  Another day when we were done ten players and again took it in our stride and won by 1-09 to 0-04 against St. Michaels.  A huge thank you to all the lads for the effort they put in.  We had some superb performances in what was a well deserved win.  Our last game is next week and we train on Wednesday evenings as usual.

 

Minor Football: Congratulations to our minor footballers who defeated Kilmore/Shannon Gaels/St. Ronan's on a score line of 4-9 to 2-12 in the first round of the championship in Kilmore on Wednesday last. This was a superb victory for the lads who had being beaten twice by the same opposition in the league. On a difficult night for football both teams gave their all in a tough entertaining game. The game was level at half time but an excellent second half performance secured a deserved victory.

 

 

 

 

U10 Hurlers:

Roscommon Gaels U10 hurlers competed in their 4th Hurling Blitz of the year on Saturday morning, hosted by Oran. Our U10 squad fielded 2 teams, with each team playing 3 matches against opposition including Oran, Athleague / Tremane and St. Dominic's. All players got plenty of game time in various positions during the games which are our primary objective for the year. The games were challenging for all players who continue to progress with their skills and learn allot from these games.

Many thanks to parents who stepped in to help our coaches organise and encourage our teams during all games.

 

We will continue to arrange more challenges in the weeks ahead to support the strong development our players are making this year.

 

U12 Hurlers:

Our U12 hurlers played their 3rd match on Thursday Evening in Tremane v Athleague/Tremane.  This was another tough game for the lads but again they battled hard to the final whistle.  At times it looked as if our opponents were pulling away but each time the lads stepped up to reel them in again.  Special mention to the U10 lads who stepped in for this game as numbers were tight due to holidays.  These guys were brave, skilful and we are really delighted to have them on board.  The panel was David King, Harry King, Ciaran Mulry, Conor Mulry, Cathal Mulry, Eoin Keaveney, Aaron Bracken, Hugh O'Connor, Odin Fallon, Brian Geraghty, Jack Walsh, Sam Walsh, Michael Beirne and Timmy Corcoran. 

 

Training continues each Monday evening @ 6:30 pm in Lisnamult.

Roscommon Gaels Hurlers who are on the County u14 hurling team who beat Meath, Kildare and Wicklow today to qualify for the all Ireland B finals in abbotstown. Well done to Roscommon u14 hurlers and management and to our Gaels boys on this great achievement.

U16 Hurling  
Our U16 Hurling championships kick off last Wednesday at 7pm in Knockcroghery. Our opponents St Dominic's fielded a strong team and had 18 players to pull from. 
We on the other hand had 10 players. We started with 10 v 13 players and at halftime the sides were level 5 points each. After several frantic phone calls and with the help of Teresa Hession, Padraic Conlon, Fergal O'Gara, Martin Lambe,  
Rory Shannon and David Waldron we managed to get 13 players on the pitch at halftime (The minimum).  What a performance we got from all the lads including Will O'Gara (age 8) who was togged out to make the 13th player after halftime.

Michael Corcoran, Eoin Kiernan, Dara Kiernan, Finn Killion, Eoin Bracken,

Ronan Lambe, Louis McCaffrey, Jack O'Gara, Ben Johnson, Aaron Shannon

Our next championship game is Wednesday 15th August at 7pm in Lisnamult.

 

 

 

 

Message from Roscommon Gaels Finance Committee

 

Tickets for the Development Draw have now been circulated among all members/families for sale. This is an essential fundraiser required for funding the day to day expenses associated with the running of the club and the fielding of 31 teams across all ages and codes.

 

Further fundraising options will need to be considered and approved by the club if this Draw is not fully supported including:

 

Introducing an annual levy on all families/members to be paid at Registration Date.

 

Membership of the weekly lotto. It only costs €2 per week to be a member of the lotto with an opportunity to win the jackpot - currently €10,000. (Consider joining the lotto today).

 

 

Return of unsold tickets is defeating the purpose of this fundraiser so if you do not sell the tickets allocated to you, then please consider buying the tickets yourself. Please promote the draw to friends and family members at home and abroad. Tickets can be purchased online via the club website. www.roscommongaels.ie

 

Remember that the 123 people who are coaching your family members are volunteers and give their time freely.

 

Significant works have been undertaken by the Club which we can be very proud of which provide  excellent facilities for all our players but maintenance of the facilities and future development depends on members fully supporting fundraising events such as this Draw.

 

A small number of club members have devoted their time to arranging prizes for this Draw, circulating the tickets and selling tickets at recent GAA events in the town. New volunteers are always welcome... Your support is required. All the prizes have been generously donated by committed club members.

 

Please Note:

The average annual running cost of the club is €98,000.

 

The annual registration fees/membership fees that are collected from you annually are paid to Croke Park for Affiliation  and Insurance purposes with no financial benefit to the club whatsoever:

 

The club is depending on weekly lotto sales and fundraisers such as this one to fund club activities.

 

The lotto teams need new members to join in the weekly Saturday night lotto sales if we are to continue with this weekly fundraiser. (If it is discontinued then significant levies will need to be introduced for the club to fund its activities going forward.)

 

The draw will take place on Saturday August 11th. Further tickets are available if you can identify takers or if you feel you can sell more.  The date set for the draw cannot be extended as the All Ireland Hurling Final will take place on August 19th

 

All sold tickets and money are to be returned to McNeill's Food store by August 4th or can be given to any coach or executive member during the week.

 

Don't leave it to others to have to remind you to return the sold tickets and money. Do it by August 4th please.
