Intermediate Football Championship

Daingean 2-9 Shannonbridge 2-10

Daingean remain on 2 points after 4 games in the intermediate championship following last Friday evenings defeat to Shannonbridge in a lively encounter in Tubber. Shannonbridge started the game brightly and registered the opening two scores of the game. Daingean swiftly responded with a goal and a point from Jamie Hayes which gave John Kennys men an early advantage. Shannonbridge soon levelled matters thanks to a goal of their own but Shane Tierney restored Daingeans single point advantage after some good work from Colin Brennan. Shannonbridge levelled the scores once again and were then awarded a penalty as the game approached half time following a foul by Stephen Burns. Burns received a black card for the offence but Daingean had player of the year to date Conan Curley to thank as he repelled the resulting penalty. Another point followed for Shannonbridge which accounted for a one point lead at the interval. Shannonbridge started the second half in similar fashion to the first as they pointed the opening two scores of the half which gave them a three point lead. Daingean continued to battle hard however and this was epitomised by some tenacious defending by Larry Reilly in defence. This spurred Daingean into life with points from Ciaran McEvoy and Jamie Hayes reducing the deficit to the minimum. Another score from Shannonbridge put two between the sides again but Daingeans cause then received a massive boost when Liam Brennan found the net following an incisive Daingean attack. A curling effort from Tierney followed by a point from an acute angle from substitute Charlie Hayes had Daingean in the lead by two as the match approached the final quarter. The score of the game followed with a swift transition from defence to attack which involved Brophy, Larry Reilly and Tierney ending with another well executed Charlie Hayes point. A Jamie Hayes point saw Daingean lead on a scoreline of 2-9 to 1-8 with little more than five minutes remaining. Heartbreak was to follow however as a point from Shannonbridge put a goal between the teams and with minutes remaining they got that goal despite the best efforts of the Daingean defence. Shannonbridge had the momentum at this stage as another attack on the Daingean goal was brilliantly thwarted by an excellent one handed tackle by David Walsh. The referee deemed it as a foul however to the despair of the Daingean supporters and Shannonbridge pointed the resulting free to win by a single point.
