Director of Hurling Coaching role for Brian Carroll

Former Offaly star Brian Carroll has been appointed as the county's 'Director of Hurling Coaching'.

The Coolderry clubman's terms of reference includes overseeing coaching and providing mentorship to Offaly Hurling Academy coaches over the next five years.

His role will also extend to clubs and schools as well as the development squads.

According to Midlands Sport, the recruitment of a Director of Fitness is currently 'well advanced'.

Former captains Rory Hanniffy and David Kenny have been appointed to the Implementation Committee of the Offaly Hurling Pathway.

'The Committee to oversee the implementation of the Offaly GAA Hurling Pathway has been announced and sees former Offaly hurler and Coolderry captain Brian Carroll take on the role of Director of Hurling Coaching. 

'The Portlaoise based School teacher will be joined on the committee by Liam Hogan All-Ireland medallist from 1981, who chaired the Hurling review, Tom Moloney acting Games Manager, Pat Cleary Coaching Officer and All-Ireland medallist from 1985, Rory Hanniffy who recently retired from Offaly senior hurling, David Kenny who missed the last couple of season with Offaly due to injury and is a secondary school teacher in St Brendan's Community School, Ger Scales from St Rynagh's who is also a Secondary school teacher in Kilcormac, current Offaly Camogie star Marian Crean and Mary Wyer, both of whom are primary teachers and former Offaly All-Ireland winning medallist Cillian Farrell who is a qualified Strength and Conditioning Coach.

'The Committee was introduced to the clubs of Offaly at a meeting in Kilcormac on Wednesday night and the emphasis was very much on the success of this being driven by clubs with the support of the implementation group and Offaly County Board through its Coaching & Games Committee. It was stressed that this is an ongoing work in progress plan which will be updated on a continuous basis and which will only work if clubs have the right personnel in place filling the important roles of Club Coaching Officer and School Liaison Officer.

'The plan, which was launched earlier this summer, was the culmination of months of work by a review committee set up by Offaly County Board Chairperson Padraig Boland and which comprised originally of Kieran Keeneghan (Chairman) St Rynaghs, Diarmuid Healy Conaghy Shamrocks, Damien Martin St Rynaghs, Pat Cleary (County Coaching Officer) Ballinamere/Durrow, Pat O'Connor Coolderry, Martin Hanamy St Rynaghs and Liam Hogan Coolderry.  The Committee subsequently evolved and expanded, under the Chairmanship of Liam Hogan and the following were added Alan Mulhall Games Manager Walsh Island, Finian McDermott Tullamore, Marion Crean Secretary (Camogie/Primary Schools) Shinrone, Mary Wyer PRO (Camogie/Primary Schools) Tullamore, Ger Scales (Post Primary Schools) St Rynaghs and Jimmy O Dwyer Leinster Council.'
