DIV 6 FOOTBALL LEAGUE

Raheen Junior Footballers had to settle for a draw against Doon in Rd 2 of the Div 6 League last Monday week in Geashill on a scoreline of 2-09 to 1-12 as they were left to rue their poor finishing touch to the numerous scoring chances created. Both sides opened with a point apiece before Raheen took the early advantage when Mark Gorman got in to score the first goal on 8 mins. Over the remainder of the half Doon added 4 points to Raheen's 3 so at the break Raheen held a 2 point advantage 1-04 to 0-05 and they got the perfect start to the second half as he punched in his and Raheen's second goal inside the first min. Over the next 25 mins Doon recovered well as they hit 1-06 to Raheen's 4 points to draw level. Then in the last min Liam Gorman slotted over a free it looked to be enough for Raheen to claim the win but a min into stoppage time Doon broke down the field and managed to scramble over the equaliser.

DIV 6 FOOTBALL LEAGUE

It might have been their second game in 3 days but Raheen Junior Footballers showed little fatigue as they gave probably their best performance of the year to beat neighbours Ballinagar in the penultimate round of the Div 6 League last Thursday in Ballinagar on a scoreline of 0-20 to 1-08 to maintain their unbeaten status in Phase 2 and remain in contention to claim a place in the final. Raheen opened the scoring with the first 4 points before Ballinagar with the first meaningful attack got in the score their goal on 12 mins but Raheen responded with 8 more points to Ballinagar's 2 over the remainder of the half to lead at the break 0-13 to 1-02. The second half was a much tighter affair with Raheen just about shading it with a further 7 points to Ballinagar's 6.

ALL IRELAND FEILE PEIL NA NOG

Na Fianna U14 Footballers done their club and county proud as they reached the Semi Final of the All Ireland Feile Peil na Nog last weekend in Cork/Kerry just losing out by 4 points. It is the first time since 1991 that a Killeigh parish side has qualified to represent Offaly in the Feile.

In Game 1 Na Fianna faced Killeavy St Monnina (Armagh) and in the first half Na Fianna completely dominated the possession but they managed to just convert 2 points and with their first attacks in the final min Killeavy drew level with 2 points. Then straight after the re-start Killeavy hit over 3 points in a row to go in front and despite Na Fianna pressing for the remainder of the game they could just manage a single point to lose out by just 0-05 to 0-03.

Game 2 on Fri eve against Ballincollig (Cork), who like Na Fianna are the reigning County Champions, was a much different affair as Na Fianna broke out of the blocks scoring 4 goals inside the first 10 mins from Mark Keeley (2), Mark Kelly & Morgan Tynan and at the break Na Fianna had it wrapped it as they led 4-03 to 1-01. In the second half just 1 more goal for Na Fianna, Mark Keeley completing his hattrick to 3 points for Ballincollig saw Na Fianna up and running with their first win 5-03 to 1-04.

In Game 3 on Saturday morning brought Na Fianna up against their hosts Eire Og (Cork) who had lost their other 2 games. The first half was closer than expected as 2 goals from Adam Mangan saw Na Fianna just marginally ahead 2-02 to 1-03. In the second half Na Fianna showed their superiority to pull clear to win comfortably in the end 4-07 to 1-05 with another goal double from Adam Mangan.

This put Na Fianna through to the Cup Q/F as group runners up and a trip north to the fine suroundings of Mallow GAA Sports complex where they came up against Carrickmore from Tyrone who play in the Offaly colours of green white and gold and who had won their 3 group games comfortably. The first half saw both sides score 3 points each. Potential disaster struck straight from the re-start as Carrickmore got through to score a goal but Na Fianna showed their talent as they dug deep to hit back with 5 points in a row within 5 mins to take a 2 point lead. The remainder of the game saw both sides add just 1 point apiece and so Na Fianna held on to claim the win 0-09 to 1-04.

Na Fianna were now through to the Semi Finals on Sunday morning in Glenflisk (Kerry) where they would again face Killieavy St Monnina (Armagh) who had beaten them in game 1 on Friday eve . In a tight affair in the first half both sides scored 4 points each but a well taken goal in the 7th min gave the Armagh lads the advantage at the break as they led 1-04 to 0-04. Killeavy increased their lead to 6 midway through the second half with 3 points in a row. Na Fianna came back with 3 points of their own with 3 mins left and a couple of goal chances came their way but Killeavy somehow managed to hold them out before they wrapped it up with their final point in the last min to claim the win on a scoreline of 1-08 to 0-07. Na Fianna players were heartbroken to lose out but they can hold their heads high that they gave it their all throughout the weekend.

In the Final Killeavy were beaten by Mayo's Castlebar Mitchells 3-10 to 0-03.
