Declan Kelly has stepped down as Offaly U21 football manager less than 24 hours after his appointment was ratified - because he hadn't agreed to take the job in the first place!

The Kilclonfert man and his selectors Benny O'Brien and David Connolly hadn't given their consent to be put forward for ratification at Wednesday night's county board meeting as a number of issues had still to be resolved.

Offaly county board has since apologised to clubs for 'misleading' them and have promised to continue to negotiate with their preferred candidate, with secretary Tommy Byrne expressing the hope that the position will be filled in the near future.
