U16 B FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP SEMI FINAL
Na Fianna U16 Footballers playing campaign is over for this year as they bowed out of the Championship losing to Shamrocks by just the minimum margin in the B Semi Final in Ballinamere last Monday week on a scoreline of 3-08 to 4-04. Na Fianna got off to a great start as they opened the scoring with a goal on 2 mins when Reece Seery made a quick break down the middle before passing to Craig Strong in the square who shot through the legs of the keeper to the net. Shamrocks then got off the mark with 2 points before Na Fianna struck for their second goal on 13 mins when Craig Strong's 45 came down in the square and in the ensuing scramble Aaron McKenna got the vital touch to send it over the line. Na Fianna immediately added their first point but the remainder of the half belonged to Shamrocks as they added 4 points split both sides of their goal on 21 mins and so at the break Shamrocks led 1-06 to 2-01. Alike the first half Na Fianna got the second half underway with a goal when Conor McGuinness caught Reece Seery's shot from the left wing in the square and flicked it to the net but within 5 mins Shamrocks turned the game on it's head with 2 goals within a min to open up a 5 point lead. Na Fianna responded with 3 points to Shamrocks 1. Then on 21 mins the sides were level as Na Fianna got their 4th goal when a shot in along the end line was turned in by Shane O'Rourke. Na Fianna keeper Ryan Kinahan made a great point blank save with 7 mins left to keep his side in it but 2 mins later Shamrocks put over what would prove to be the winning point. Shamrocks will now meet St Rynaghs in the final.
NA FIANNA: Ryan Kinahan, Shane Finneran, Conor Brophill, Ross Colton, Anthony Malone, Eoin Corcoran, Jack Shiels, Ger Plunkett, Conor Langton, Kaelyn Caolan Flanagan (0-03), Reese Seery, Aaron McKenna (1-00), Jamie Ballesty, Craig Strong (1-00), Conor McGuinness (1-00).
SUBS: Adam Cuddy (for Ross Colton), Shane O'Rourke (1-01) (for Jack Shiels), Patrick Kelly (for Conor McGuinness), C J Murphy, Aidan Pierce.
U14 A FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL
There was great scenes of joy and celebrations in O'Connor Park, Tullamore last Saturday afternoon as Na Fianna U14 Footballers were crowned U14 A Championship Winners for 2015 by beating Ferbane / Belmont in the Final and in doing so avenging their defeat by the same opposition in the same Final last year. This is the first time since the club was formed that Na Fianna have won an A Football Championship Title and the first time since 1991 that the U14 A Football title has been won by a Killeigh parish side. Both sides opened the scoring with a point apiece on 4 mins. On 9 mins Na Fianna raised their first green flag when James Nolan's shot from 45m out was blocked down by the keeper and Lee Mulpeter was quickest to react to scramble the ball over the line. Then midway through the first half came the talking point of the game when Na Fianna keeper Conor Kelly who had earlier made a great save was black carded having being adjudged to have fouled the F/B forward and F/B were awarded a penalty which they scored past replacement keeper Ross Plunkett. Over the remainder of the half Na Fianna added 3 points but another 1-01 for F/B meant at the break Na Fianna who had at least 70% of the possession were trailing by the minimum 2-02 to 1-04. At the restart Na Fianna brought David Boland back to play between the posts but F/B did not give him time to adjust as they burst out of the blocks scoring 1-01 within the first min. It looked like F/B would push on from here but Na Fianna showed their strong character by starting their comeback with a pointed free followed by their second goal on 5 mins when Mikey Buckley's shot in from the sideline was punched to the net by Mark Dillon who jumped 1 on 1 with the keeper. Both sides added a point each before Na Fianna finally got their noses in front with goal no 3 when Emmett Curley made a solo run in from the wing before shooting low along the ground to the corner of the net. Na Fianna were full of confidence now and they added the next 3 points by the midpoint of the half but F/B were not giving up and they hit back with 2 points with 8 mins left. Incredibly neither side could add to their tally in the time remaining and so Na Fianna held on to be crowned Champions with captain Glenn Hassett presented with the cup from Offaly chairman Padraig Boland.
NA FIANNA: Conor Kelly, David Carthy, David McElduff, David Boland, Adam Mangan, Aaron Flanagan, Adam Strong, Emmett Curley (1-00), Glen Hassett, Mark Dillon (1-01), Michael Buckley (0-01), James Nolan (0-01), Ryan Strong, Morgan Tynan (0-03), Lee Mulpeter (1-03).
