O'Byrne Cup satisfies Flanagan

Offaly manager Pat Flanagan

Offaly manager Pat Flanagan has admitted that they got what they wanted out of the O'Byrne Cup.

The Faithful County recorded two comfortable wins over Laois and NUI Maynooth, while they lost narrowly to Dublin in the group stages of the early season competition.

The former Westmeath and Sligo manager told the Midland Tribune that the O'Byrne Cup was all part of their preparation for the forthcoming National League.

"We set out our stall for these games to be training matches," said Flanagan. "We asked for 100% commitment and honesty and we got that and more.

"Lads put in serious shifts. Apart from that, it is difficult to know what to read into it. Training was exceptionally hard and we never pulled back. We had 3 to 4 heavy sessions before the O'Byrne Cup."
