Micko to launch McGee book

October 23, 2014

Football Review Committee Chairman Eugene McGee

Eugene McGee's new book, entitled 'The GAA in My Time', will be launched next Thursday, October 30 in Croke Park.

The launch of the book, which McGee describes as being "very much personalised", will be performed by Kerry legend Mick O'Dwyer. The irony of Micko launching the book won't be lost on anyone after he and McGee were opposing managers when Offaly famously denied the Kingdom of a five-in-a-row of All-Ireland football titles in 1982.

Fittingly, a photograph of Seamus Darby's late winning goal adorns the front cover of the book which is published by Ballpoint Press.

Hailing from the parish of Colmcille in north Co. Longford, McGee had managed UCD to six Sigerson Cups as well as two Dublin SFC and two All-Ireland club titles in 1974 and '75 before guiding Offaly to three Leinster titles and, of course, an All-Ireland triumph.

He also managed Ireland in the Compromise Rules series twice in the mid-1980s, Cavan for four years and Cashel, who he led to a Longford SFC title in 1977.

A former editor of the Longford Leader, McGee writes a long-running weekly column for the Irish Independent. He was also chairman of the FRC (Football Review Committee), which was responsible for introducing the black card to Gaelic football earlier this year.
