Football

Daingean and Clonmore Harps renewed their rivalry again last Friday night, this time in Geashill for the replay of their Junior A football championship semi-final. The game immediately followed the same pattern as the drawn game the previous Saturday, with both teams finding scores extremely difficult to come by. But as with the drawn game, it was Daingean who found their stride first and by the quarter-hour mark had established a 3 points to no-score lead. Clonmore rallied and closed out the half the stronger of the two, reducing the gap to just a single point at half-time leaving the game delicately poised for a winner-takes-all second half.

Again, it was Daingean who made the brighter start and quickly re-established a 3-point cushion. The tide at this stage seemed to be going against Clonmore and their task was made all the more difficult when Sean Foy was shown a straight red card. But fair play to the Harps, this, if anything, made them raise their game and they soon drew level as Daingean looked like letting the game slip away. With the scores locked at 6 points apiece, it was at this juncture that Daingean finally took the game by the scruff of the neck. From a superb defensive effort all the way up to the forward line who managed to kick the next 8 scores without reply, Daingean produced their best football of the championship this year in a blistering last 15 or so minutes and ran out fully deserving and convincing winners in the end. Congratulations to all involved.

Final score: Daingean 0-14 Clonmore Harps 0-6
