Gavin and McGrath in running for replay

Offaly referee Brian Gavin

Brian Gavin and James McGrath are the frontrunners to referee the All-Ireland hurling final replay on September 27.

Westmeath's Barry Kelly took charge of yesterday's drawn encounter, but it is GAA policy to appoint a different referee for replays. That would leave Offaly's Brian Gavin, who was standby referee and linesman for yesterday's game, in the frame to take charge of his third Liam MacCarthy Cup decider, having previously handled the 2011 and 2013 (drawn) finals.

Another Westmeath whistler, James McGrath, is also certain to be considered after taking charge of the replays in 2012 and 2013. The Turin clubman's last big assignment was the All-Ireland semi-final between Kilkenny and Limerick.

Meanwhile, the GAA is due to announce the All-Ireland football final referee, with Laois' Eddie Kinsella and Marty Duffy of Sligo believed to be the match officials in contention.
