MINOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
Na Fianna Minor Footballers had to settle for a draw in their opening round of the Championship against Edenderry last Tuesday week in Geashill in what was a very exciting high scoring encounter on a scoreline of 3-19 to 5-13. Both sides got off the mark with 2 points apiece inside the first 8 mins. Then Na Fianna struck for 2 goals within 3 mins to seemingly put themselves in control, the first from Kevin Kinahan and the second from Shane Dolan but within 2 mins Edenderry had hit back with 2 goals of their own. Na Fianna then added 2 points to Edenderry's 1 before Edenderry struck for their 3rd goal on 23 mins when a 45 was blocked down on the line and tapped into the net but Na Fianna came back with another 4 points to Edenderry's 2 in the remaining mins of the half to leave it level at the break 2-08 to 3-05. The second half started alike the first with both sides adding 2 points apiece before Na Fianna registered their 3rd goal on 5 mins when James Lalor took a pass around the 45m line and made a solo run in before blasting the ball left footed into the right corner of the net from just inside the square. Na Fianna then added 5 points to Edenderry's 3 before Edenderry got in to score their 3rd goal on 17 mins. Na Fianna again responded by adding another 3 points to Edenderry's 2 before Edenderry were awarded a penalty on 28 mins for a foul in the square which they dispatched to the net to draw level and they went ahead with a point for the first time in the half as the game went into injury time but Na Fianna were not going to be denied and 2 mins into stoppage time Shane Dolan fired over a point to draw it level.

Na Fianna opened the scoring with a point inside the first min and struck for the first goal on 4 mins when a lineball taken by Mark Dillon was won by Ger Plunkett to pass it to Craig Strong who fired it in off the upright into the net. Na Fianna then got going adding 5 points in a row before Tullamore got off the mark with their first point on 13 mins followed by another moments later. Then on 20mins Na Fianna put the game out of sight as they dispatched their second goal when Craig Strong's high ball in from just inside the half was caught by Lee Mulpeter on the endline and he rounded the keeper and tapped it into the net. The remainder of the half saw saw Na Fianna go further ahead by adding 3 points to Tullamore's 2 and so at the break Na Fianna led comfortably 2-09 to 0-04. With the win now virtually secured the second half saw the level of intensity reduced but Na Fianna still increased their lead with a further 4 points to Tullamore's 1 by the midpoint of the half at which point Na Fianna were forced to play the remainder of the game with 14 players as midfielder Sean Beatty was forced off injured and could not be replaced as the full compliment of subs had been used.
