Winning the O’Byrne Cup is important to Longford manager Padraic Davis but not as important as their upcoming Allianz FL Division 3 campaign.

“Look at who has won the O’Byrne Cup most often: Kildare, Meath and Dublin,” he pointed out to the Irish Independent following Saturday’s 1-12 to 0-11 final win over Offaly in O’Connor Park.

“They also lead the way in Leinster Championship wins.

“So is the O’Byrne Cup important to the Longfords, Offalys and Westmeaths of this world? Of course it is. But it is not as important as the league.

“Looking at the age profile of the team, it is hugely important that we retain our place in the Division 3 and I hope we can do that.”

The Midlanders will look to continue their winning ways when they play host to Louth next Sunday at 2pm.
