Duignan acknowledges task in hand

Former Offaly hurler Michael Duignan knows that he will have a huge task on his hands if he is elected as the new county board chairman.

Duignan is going up against current chairman Tommy Byrne is what will be the most publicised election in GAA history.

The lead up to this year’s Offaly convention has been well documented as a group in the county have got together to remove the current executive as they feel they are not moving Offaly in the right direction.

The whole situation has threatened to boil over on a number of occasions as the parties concerned stand their ground.

Should Duignan get the nod as chairman, he has a big job on his hands, which he accepts, but the former All-Ireland winner is confident that those around him will help get the job done.

“We need to breath new life into it. Colm (Cummins) is strategically very good and his experience is very important. I have chaired my minor club but a county board is much more daunting,” said Duignan.

“Colm’s experience of people there that is very important. It is really about getting our head down and stuck in. I am very passionate about finding out on the ground where we are, what support our clubs and schools need.

“We will look for support from Leinster and Central Council. We will get three, four or five more coaches if they are needed. Offaly is a very well respected county. Everywhere I go, people are looking for Offaly to come back.”
