A 3-06 haul from Dunboyne’s Emma Duggan paved the way for Royal victory in today’s eagerly awaited Minor Championship clash between Meath and Dublin at St. Margarets. With the aid of a stiff wind, the Royals soared into a 2-08 to 0-02 half time lead. On the resumption, Dublin managed to reel in the Royals’ significant lead and reduced it to four points, Dublin captain Jodi Egan finding the net. But a third Duggan goal and a strong finish from the Royals gave them their first Minor win over the team from the Capital in some time. Sarah Wall, Orlagh Lally and Duggan were all to the fore. The trio were all key members of the Leinster PPS squad which won the Shield at the recent Interprovincial competition.

In the second Group A fixture, last year’s All Ireland Minor B Champions enjoyed a big win over Offaly. Gavin Doyle’s charges won 2-22 to 0-02 with Orlaith Sullivan the Lilywhites top scorer, hitting 1-06 over the course of the hour. Hazel McLoughlin hit 1-03 in total while Angela Brady hit both scores for the Faithful County. Next up for the Lilywhites is a visit from Dublin in what will be an intriguing contest in March!

In Group B, Westmeath travelled to Coolgreaney and took home all three points in a high scoring contest with Wexford. The umpires were kept busy with 8-30 scored over the hour in total! Westmeath led by 1-10 to 0-07 before a score frenzied second half saw the visitors seal victory on a 5-18 to 3-12 scoreline.

Timahoe was the venue for Laois and Longford’s first Minor Championship game of 2019 and they served up another scoring thriller. Laois were 3-04 to 2-05 to the good at half time but five goals for the visitors after the break saw them take the lead and seal victory. Ciara Healy top scored for Longford with 2-04, while Orla Nevin, Ciara Foxe, Ciara Sutton, Cait Kiely and Holly Craig Cassidy all found the net for the visitors. Shifra Havill (2-01) and Emily Lacey (0-06) were the home side’s top scorers and it finished in Timahoe with Longford securing a 7-05 to 3-13 win.

In Group C, Wicklow and Louth had the honour of opening the 2019 Leinster Championships on Saturday and this game did not disappoint. The Wee County had a commanding 5-07 to 0-04 lead at the break but Wicklow out-performed their visitors in the second period, narrowing the gap to four before a 6th green flag secured all three points for the visitors. Niamh Caffrey was the Garden County’s topscorer hitting 1-03 with Emer McNulty and Emma Katus also finding the back of the net. In the Group’s second game, Carlow were big winners over Kilkenny in James Stephens.

Next round of fixtures is set for the 18 th March.
