Club History contd.

Ballycumber won their way to the Junior semi final in 1966 and had to withstand a severe test of their character before disposing of a tough challenge from old rivals Durrow to earn the right to contest the County Final.

The Final against Kilcormac was played in Tullamore. Ballycumber wore the county jerseys because of the clash of colours. The game was slow to start, but served up an exciting last quarter, after county senior sharpshooter Har Donnelly had scored a penalty for Kilcormac.

Ballycumber led at half time 1—7 to 0—3 with scores from Pat Monaghan,Peter Guinan and Sean Egan scored a goal after a good passing move. Denis Scully got his name on the scoreboard with a point three minutes before the interval. Pat Monaghan pointed two frees in the last two minutes of the half. Har Donnelly[0---2] and Christy Hand had replied for Kilcormac.

The second half started at a very fast pace and the teams exchanged two points each, Patsy Guinan and Pat Monaghan for Ballycumber and W. Mitchell and Har Donnelly for Kilcormac. Then came the penalty which left the score at Ballycumber 1—9  Kilcormac 1---5. Har Donnelly scored one more point for the losers and Len Casey had the last score of the game when he flicked over a point from a free by Pat Monaghan.

Ferbane hold off Ballycumber rally.

Ferbane 2—7 Ballycumber 1—10.

Ferbane dominated the first 50 minutes of the game and were always superior in skill and teamwork, but nevertheless credit is due to Ballycumber who demonstrated clearly how spirit can overcome technical deficiencies.

Leo Grogan put Ferbane ahead after three minutes with a goal following a defensive mistake. Tony McTague added two points from frees, Ferbane’s second goal followed quickly and Rody Kilduff and Brian Corcoran scored a point each.

Ballycumber didn’t open their account until the 17th minute when Gerry Doolin had their first point from a free. Kilduff and McTague added two more points for Ferbane, but just before the interval Gerry Doolin had two more points from frees to leave the interval score, Ferbane 2—5 Ballycumber 0—3.

Tom Wright and Joe Byrne raised two white flags for Ferbane on the resumption, but Christy Daly and Pat Monaghan replied in similar fashion for Ballycumber.

Patsy Guinan and Pat Monaghan again reduced the leeway to six points.

Now came Ballycumber’s grandstand finish and Pat Monaghan 2pts and Brendan Daly[1--1 got the all important scores in the closing stages.

Ballycumber Win Football Without Frills.

S.F Replay ; Ballycumber 2—9; Ferbane 0—3.

In a Senior Football replay that was more notable for its tough uncompromising body clashes than for its style, Ballycumber defeated a more stylish Ferbane side with a final tally of 2—9 to 0—3, having held their rivals scoreless in the second half, after leading 1—4to 0—3 at the interval in Sunday’s game at O’Connor Park, Tullamore.

Ballycumber opened the scoring with Joe Flynn’s point after ten minutes but Tony McTague levelled with a free a minute later and two minutes afterwards Ferbane were ahead with another McTague point[free].

Just on the quarter hour Patsy Guinan raced in for a well taken Ballycumber goal that put his side ahead again; and from here on Ballycumber never lost the lead.

Several efforts by Ferbane followed but only a point when a McTague free was deflected over the bar by Leo Grogan resulted.

For ten minutes Ferbane kept up a great barrage, but a relieving effort for Ballycumber gave Gerry Doolin a point from a free.

Back came Ferbane but a succession of wides was poor compensation for the hard work put into the effort.

The same could not be said of Gerry Doolin [total tally 0—5] who chipped in a point from a 14yds free three minutes from halftime to give Ballycumber  a 1—4 to 0—3 lead at half time.

The second half was all one-way traffic and a Denis Scully goal put Ballycumber in a very strong position, leading by seven points

Apart from a disallowed goal Ballycumber also scored 5 points with Gerry Doolin taking three of them and one each from Brendan Daly and Peter Guinan.

Ballycumber win easily.

Ballycumber 2---7 St. Rynaghs 0---5.

Though St.Rynaghs led by 0---3 to 0—2 at the interval, Ballycumber proved their superiority over the Cloghan side in the second half, scoring 2—4 against St.Rynaghs 2 points.

Ballycumber opened the scoring after four minutes when Gerry Doolin pointed a 21yds free. Pat Moylan did likewise for St.Rynaghs. Noel Guinan and Pat Moylan added points. Christy Daly scored a good point for Ballycumber to leave St. Rynaghs one point ahead at half time.

Two minutes after the restart Gerry Doolin levelled the scoring from a free, Mick Hough replied for St, Rynaghs two minutes later. Ballycumber then made continuous attacks on the St.Rynaghs goal, but their forwards were kept at range by the strong St, Rynaghs defence. However their pressure was justified in the 9th minute with a point each from Sonny Daly and Christy Daly. The first goal of the game a minute later came from Patsy Guinan. Pat Monaghan made it 1—6 immediately after. This was followed with a point by Gerry Burke for St, Rynaghs. Pat Monaghan pointed a free in the 25th minute, and before full time Peter Guinan took advantage of a bad clearance by the St. Rynaghs defence to score a goal.

Ballycumber 0—8 Daingean 0—6.

Ballycumber senior footballers, by defeating Daingean at O’Connor Park, Tullamore on Sunday last, have made their way to their first ever county final and now await the outcome of the Rhode v Gracefield semi final to know their opponents in the final.

With the breeze behind Ballycumber in the first half they took advantage early in the game when Pat Monaghan pointed a free and Brendan Daly added another. In the 12thminute Pat Monaghan scored a point from a’50’ to put his team three points ahead. Denis Scully made it four in the 14th minute

In the 20th minute Ballycumber were awarded a penalty and Pat Monaghan sent the ball low to the right and wide. Christy Daly scored a point and Monaghan pointed another free in the 25th minute. Peter Guinan raised another white flag before the interval to leave the score reading. Ballycumber 0—7 Daingean0—0.

The second half started with Daingean on the attack, but they failed to score until the 5th minute when Jody Hickey pointed a 14yds free. Kevin McNamara narrowed the gap to 5 points. Daingean were now taking advantage of the strong breeze behind them and in the 15th minute they were only three points in arrears, following scores from Jimmy Kilmurray and Jody Hickey. Gerry Doolin scored a point from a free to leave Ballycumber four points ahead and ten minutes to play. The losers then put on the pressure and Tom Fleming was forced to make some brilliant saves. Daingean did score two more points[ Hickey and McNamara] but it was not enough to stop Ballycumber reaching the final.

Senior Football Final Sunday 26th October 1968.

Ballycumber 2—5 Gracefield 0—6.

Ballycumber won the toss and inside four minutes Pat Keegan paved the way for his opening point and just five minutes later a midfield free by Frank Weir led to Paddy Kennedy’s second Gracefield point.

The winners opened their account with Pat Monaghan placing Dennis Scully for a point and Ger Doolan got the equaliser. Doolan put his side ahead with a 30yds point from a free on the 15th minute, but a minute later Frank Weir’s midfield free gave Mick Knight the opening for the equalising point for Gracefield. Paddy Keegan followed with another and as rain lashed the pitch Gracefield were ahead again.

It was “all Gracefield “ now, but Ger Doolan got the opening for the equalising point from a free, and Gracefield were in the attack with Paddy Keenan placing Paddy Kennedy for a good run towards the goal, but he was pulled down when in a good position for a net score and to everyone’s amazement, he sent the 14yds free wide, leaving the sides level 0—4 all at half time.

Gracefield set the pace in the opening minutes with Eddie Kennedy’s point to regain the lead inside three minutes, but after several wides his team lost the initiative and Ballycumber worked towards the goal for Christy Daly to send Joe Flynn on a solo that ended with the ball in the net, the break that spelt victory for Ballycumber.

The pitch erupted in cheering and when two minutes later Peter Guinan pointed, Ballycumber were well on the road to success. The 17th minute point by Pat Keegan was Gracefield’s last score of the match and on the 23rd minute another great goal by Denis Scully clinched the issue for Ballycumber and the best efforts of Gracefield to grab the chestnuts from the fire failed against the solid Ballycumber defence.

The victors for whom 23 of the 25 man panel were past pupils of Boher National School returned to a massive reception and were paraded from one end of the Village to the other on a Truck. The party went on for days.

The contribution made by the former Meath All Ireland winning midfielder Peter Moore to the successful championship run was immense. Peter brought a wealth of knowledge to the training field and his calm but fiercely determined attitude towards proper preparation for matches and his quick assessment of situations on the field made him a man apart. The tall quiet spoken Meath man will always have a special place in Ballycumber GAA history.
