County Senior Football Championship Round 5:

St. Kieran’s 1.10 Newcastlewest 0.15

Knockaderry was the venue on Sunday last for the winner takes all round five encounter with our nearest rivals Newcastlewest. Both teams went into the game with perfect records following their respective wins over Ballysteen, Oola, Fr. Casey’s and St. Patrick’s and victory would guarantee direct passage into the county semi-played. Played in excellent underfoot conditions following the fine spell of weather during the past weekend it was Newcastlewest who got the game’s opening score before Seamus Mangan opened his and Kieran’s account with an excellent score off his left boot to tie up the game inside the opening ten minutes. The game was very much possession orientated with both sides working the ball efficiently from the back to the middle third. Our account could well have been increased were it not for several wayward attempts during the course of the opening half, but in saying that Newcastlewest also coughed up a number of excellent opportunities which, had they scored would have left us with a mountain to climb at the interval. Further scores came from Jack Harnett and Seamus Mangan once again to increase our tally. As the game progressed Newcastlewest began to exert some dominance around the middle third as we began to find it increasingly difficult to win primary possession from the kick out. We trailed by three points going in at the interval and with a big task on our hands which got even bigger as the second half developed as Newcastlewest increased their tally to five. From here it looked as if the game were gone but to the players credit they stood up to the challenge and got themselves back into the game brilliantly with points from Sean McSweeney and a brilliant effort from Anthony Molyneaux to eat into the Newcastlewest lead. The game turned on its head when Darragh Treacy broke through the heart of the Newcastlewest defensive lines and rifled the ball past the helpless Newcastlewest custodian to tie up the game. With the game drawing to conclusion and hanging in the balance both teams poured forward in pursuit of the decisive score to seal the win, unfortunately for us it was the men in black and white who found the way to fashion to late scores to give themselves a two-point lead going into injury time. with time still on the clock Paudie McCarthy, Brendan McCarthy and Anthony Molyneaux and co worked hard to create a final goal scoring opportunity but unfortunately, we couldn’t find a way past the mass blanket defence deployed by Newcastlewest and at the final whistle we came away just short by two points. All is not lost and after four excellent wins in the group stages we have guaranteed ourselves a quarter final berth in ten days’ time against Monaleen while Newcastlewest advance directly to the semi-finals. Elsewehere in the group Ballysteen saw off the challenge of Fr. Casey’s to secure the final quarter final place and in doing so have set up a clash with Ballylanders.

West Junior B Football Championship Semi Final:

St. Kieran’s 2.4 Drom/Broadford 0.16

The junior footballers bowed out of the west championship on Friday evening last when the came up against a far superior and more experience Drom/Broadford side containing many players with county championship medals at their disposal. Despite the relative inexperience amongst our ranks the players worked hard throughout the game against a Drom side who had a little too much for us on the evening to advance to the west final against Granagh/Ballingarry.

All Ireland Ladies Junior Football Championship Final:

St. Kieran’s GAA club would like to congratulate Roisin Ambrose and the Limerick ladies’ footballers on their comprehensive victory over Louth on Sunday afternoon in the All Ireland junior final, their performance on Sunday was a sight to behold and it is great to see another All Ireland championship coming back to the banks of the Shannon so soon after the All Ireland senior hurling final win.

ADRSC Lip Sync:

Following the extremely successful Lip Sync in the Devon Inn Hotel last November ADRSC will once again be hosting a Lip Sync event on Saturday November 10 in the Devon Inn Hotel, Templeglantine. Last year’s event proved to be extremely successful and it was great to see so many people from the locality participate in and support the event over the two nights. All funds raised on the night will be going towards the new Astroturf facility which is currently under construction next to the school field in Ardagh and will hopefully be completed in the next few months. There are still a few places available for any potential acts and if any of you are interested in participating don’t be shy and get in contact with any committee member as preparations will be commencing this week. In addition there will also be a scrap-metal collection on Saturday October 6, if any of you have any unwanted scrap metal lying around the garden or hidden away at the back of sheds and want to dispose of it you have the opportunity to do so on this day as we will have a holding area in Ardagh and we will also have a number of tractors doing collections where required. Again, we would encourage you to please get in contact with any committee member ASAP to make the necessary arrangements.

Best wishes to the Old Mill Ladies footballers who take on Fr. Casey’s this Friday evening in the County Junior Football final in Mountcollins.
